A French hospital which has retested old samples from pneumonia patients discovered that it treated a man who had Covid-19 as early as Dec. 27, nearly a month before the French government confirmed its first cases.
Yves Cohen, head of resuscitation at the Avicenne and Jean Verdier hospitals in the northern suburbs of Paris, told French media that scientists had retested samples from 24 patients treated in December and January who tested negative for the flu.
"Of the 24, we had one who was positive for Covid-19 on Dec. 27," he told the news channel on Sunday.
Each sample was retested several times to ensure there were no errors, he added.
France, which has seen almost 25,000 people die from the virus since March 1, confirmed its first three COVID-19 cases on Jan. 24, including two patients in Paris and another in the southwestern city of Bordeaux.
Cohen said the patient had survived and that a first investigation to trace the first contamination has been carried out.
"He was sick for 15 days and infected his two children, but not his wife, who works in a supermarket.
"He was amazed, he didn't understand how he had been infected. We put the puzzle together and he had not made any trips. The only contact that he had was with his wife."
The man's wife worked alongside a Sushi stand, close to colleagues of Chinese origin, Cohen said. It was not clear whether those colleagues had travelled to China, and the local health authority should investigate, he said.
"We're wondering whether she was asymptomatic," he said.

From BBC News:
Dr Cohen, said the patient was a 43-year-old man from Bobigny, north-east of Paris.
He told the BBC that the patient must have been infected between 14 and 22 December, as coronavirus symptoms take between five and 14 days to appear.
He was admitted to hospital on 27 December - this was four days before the World Health Organization’s China country office was informed of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause being detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
Dr Cohen pointed out that the patient’s wife worked at a supermarket near Charles de Gaulle airport and could have come into contact with people who had recently arrived from China.
The patient’s wife said that “often customers would come directly from the airport, still carrying their suitcases”.

And even after you do all this investigative work....what's your point. It still doesn't tell you that he died from 19. Too many facts missing.
He did not die.
Okay...Then he should have antibodies...yes? And so should his kids. Why aren’t we hearing that or did I miss it?
There were several flights per week from Wuhan (WUH) to Paris (CDG) operated by Air France, China Southern Air, and other air carriers.
If the French citizen / wife was infected in mid-December, the traveler from Wuhan was infected in late November.
No idea. Its interesting that he had it in December. Where are the other cases?
Did his kids bring it to him?
When did the US CDC employee get recalled from Wuhan? I have a vague recollection that we had someone working there.
Missing piece....Where are the anti-body tests for the entire family? Are they now immune? Look around...how many more in the area around this family or their hang outs.
It seems like this all started in November in China.
And I don’t know if that helps anyone at all :-)
Because the antibodies thing isn’t a given with this Wuhan virus
Now we’re getting somewhere. Mid December in France. Why not the US West Coast?
Well at least old pneumonia got the blame for once in the last few months. Maybe two years from now we maaay? see numbers. It will be interesting to look at monthly deaths pneumonia, vs: wohan vs: totals and the not faked bump if any.
The #ChiCom Virus was in the move almost immediately.
“Because the antibodies thing isnt a given with this Wuhan virus.”
Says who? How in the hell do you think patient’s defeat it?
None of the medicines directly attack the virus. They attack symptoms brought on by the virus, help the patient defeat the symptoms while their immune system mounts, and finally succeeds, at defeating the virus. That success leaves antibodies in the system that recognize the virus next time, and at that time will start making copies of themselves to mount a new attack.
In France in December and on the U.S. west coast in December.
Not so...A simple blood test will show the antibodies.
biggest problem with CV-19 testing is that it has a 30% error rate in the positive results. when positive it will be wrong 30% of the time.
