About 4.5 million Italians are returning to work Monday as Italy one of the countries hardest hit by COVID-19 begins lifting some restrictions meant to stop the spread of the disease.
Italy has lost nearly 29,000 people because of the coronavirus, second only to the United States, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. More than 210,000 people in the country have been infected. Italy was one of the first countries to be racked by the disease. The government imposed strict lockdown policies on March 9, earlier than many countries started responding, as NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reported from Rome.
The construction sector, wholesale and certain manufacturing companies started welcoming workers back to work Monday, as Poggioli reported.
Many other aspects of Italian life will inch closer to normal. Restaurants are able to reopen, though they can prepare meals for takeout only. Parks can reopen with social distancing measures, and people can move beyond 200 yards from their home, among other activities.
"There's both eager anticipation and outright fear of the unknown," Poggioli reported. "There's really still lots of anxiety because the reopening is going to place a lot more responsibility on individuals. They're going to have to weigh personal decisions based on health risk, psychological well-being and economic needs."
The government will continue to enforce social distancing guidelines, and individuals will still be required to carry documentation stating why they're out of their homes.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said last week that Italians were free to visit congiunti, a word that according to The Associated Press can mean either relatives, relations or kinsmen, within their home region. To clarify what he meant by the word, Conte said the term included "relatives, and to those with whom they have relationships of steady affection.
They seem to be wearing those “un-American” masks. ;-)
The mask is dog-whistle obedience training to see at a quick glance what perentage will be willing to accept:
1) Mandatory cell phone app tracking “health” and contact provimity
2) The vaccine—if (or more likely, WHEN) it is ever developed.
3) The hand or (preferably) forehead embedded microchip to make “contact tracing” all the easier. All in the name of “health” and “safety”.
The MASK is the beginning of the MARK!
That is one theory.
I have another.
2020 is the year that the sociopaths self-identified. They took off their masks.
And those patriots who never put them on?
Screw masks. I use a bandanna. Waaaaay batter. And the fools accept it
I take it down once Im
Inside
With these masks, we are all antifa now!
I don’t mean to sound cold but after all of that horror there was only 29,000? I seem to recall a very hot summer where they lost tens of thousands of old people because of no air conditioning
I am glad things are returning back to normal and hope there is not a resurgence.
I don’t see why there should be if people are careful
Then I guess it’s good that I never did the diaper-face thing to begin with!
And no plan to begin doing so either.
This is why 2 million Americans are going to die from this.
I hope its not too late for their planting season. I read somewhere farmers were suffering because they could not get their seasonal workers into the country or into the fields.
So, when can I go to Florence? I NEED some gelato.
Go hibernate yourself.
Sociopaths are self-absorbed arrogant folks who think they know better than everyone else and couldn’t care less if other folks suffer bad consequences.
They think they don’t need masks because they won’t get sick, and couldn’t care less if they infect others.
In 2020 the sociopaths have “no masks” to hide behind anymore.
“In 2020 the sociopaths have no masks to hide behind anymore.”
Agree. I don’t know the specifics for Italy, but once we start to lift the lockdowns (which is just starting), we’ll be seeing a huge spike in cases (due to the FluBros), and will just have to right back into lockdown.
Since the cases won’t show up for about two weeks, next weekend will be our one moment of freedom until we try the same again, at the end of June.
Then be prepared to never enter another place of business. Remember your rights end at my nose.
HA! Out here in “Flyover country” I’ve had no issue getting into any place that is open.
Going to an ear doctors and then shopping today.
Any face covering will do. If you want you and yours out of quarantine faster, you will wear a face covering when in close public situations, and you will tell everyone you see who is not wearing a face covering to go find one.
Stay at home and social distancing work, but they kill the economy. If you want this sh!t to end, wear a mask when out in public!
I know what you are saying. The CDC really effed this up in the beginning, just like they effed up the early testing. They said masks are not effective in protecting you from the virus.
But masks are effective in helping slow the spread! Isnt that what they said they wanted?
Youve got multitudes of Typhoid Marys out there spreading this virus. They dont even know they are infected! They have no symptoms and maybe never will. But theyre still spreading the virus!
Theres no way to recognize them. They look as healthy as anyone. But they are spreading the virus.
If they, and everyone else were wearing a mask, we wouldnt have to worry so much about who they were. The mask theyre wearing would slow the spread.
This is one thing that anyone could have learned from the Chinese videos at the beginning. But leave it to the CDC to get it completely wrong.
Sure, if everyone continues to stay at home - no problem! Youre not going to get the virus is you never see anyone else.
But this kills the economy. How can we get back out, talk to people, actually go places without getting the virus? Even the strongest of us are going to be knocked on our backs for a while if we get this virus.
Masks. Its very simple. If everyone is wearing face coverings, the spread of the virus will slow immensely. And our economy can get back to being Great again.
I just said be prepared..
