Amazons decision to let engineers and other office staff keep working from home through at least Oct. 2 was another blow for struggling merchants in downtown Seattle and Bellevue, which have been virtual ghost towns since the coronavirus crisis emptied the cubicle farms in March.
The decision, which the Seattle-based online retailer shared with employees Thursday, also could signal a broader trend toward extending work-from-home practices. Other white-collar employers are realizing that returning to the workplaces is likely to require extensive precautions...

I also wonder to what degree they are afraid of very heated political discussions occurring in the wake of the lockdowns.
I am not eager to see most of my co-workers. Nor am I eager to wait a half hour for my turn to ride the elevator with the one other person allowed in it at the same time.
My son works for Amazon. Was informed on Friday mandatory WFH until October 2nd. After that.... it’s his choice.
But I do enjoy the commute and the dress code.
If we don’t get back to work, and normalcy, it’s going to
continue wreaking havoc on businesses who depend on normalcy.
People are going to have to buck up.
These Leftist organizations are going to do their damnedest
to make sure Trump hasn’t a prayer of getting the economy
going.
That’s all this is about.
If we are just as productive working from home, let them work from home.
I think it is great he can work from home. If a lot of the Tech sector was not able to do so the economy would be much more hosed.
I also think places like California and Washington where there are tech hubs the Governors are using that as a reason not to open up because they probably think that sector is their economy.
Of course, this is Seattle. Maybe the businesses there don’t want their employees complaining about being attacked by ANTIFA.
Oh man, the Oreo former president is going to be very mad. He might skip his next golf outing.
After all of the effort that VAR-JAR and the Oreo tried to make everyone live downtown and not the suburbs. ‘It’ is probably crying in the corner hoping that Mike can comfort him.
Three of my kids are working from home, and hate it. I would have hated it too.
I laugh about all the young, cool kids who bought 1200 square feet condos for $500K downtown and now have to spend all their waking hours stuck in them with no bars or Starbucks hang out at and increasingly aggressive panhandlers to (and rats—the actual animal kinds) to have to pass by on their way to the bodega.
Yep,
Save money of real estate too. I haven’t commuted to an office in nearly twenty years and it would require a couple hundred thousand extra a year for to even consider it again.
Hey! You’re getting paid for that half hour! Ride the damn elevator and shut your yap!
Would be a lot easier to just work from home though. Never mind.
Did you work with any super-hot babes who wear tight skirts? I bet you miss them huh? Huuuuhhh?
Some people wan work to be work and home to be home, with little or no blurring of the boundary between the two.
The commute to the home office is easy, lunch is better and cheaper and I only have to wear a nice shirt for Zoom meetings. Pressed pants not required.
Working from home will be with us for the long run.
Not to mention it helps mitigate lawsuit risk. (”You brought me back to the office and didn’t have sufficient virus transmission prevention measures in place! I’m suing!”).
Reports are mixed on whether workers are as productive working from home. Some managers seem to be saying it’s not working, others say it’s fine.
If we can just keep people off the damn porn sites and stop them from cracking the first beer at 10:30 am we may be okay.
All people working from home should be on webcam the whole time. That would straighten things right up, I say.
Creating social distancing at the office will be expensive.
Letting people work from home is cheap.
And most people prefer to work from home than to commute.
