I believe China is solely responsible for the virus, but these same agencies totally missed 9/11 and told us Iraq had WMD, so I am very uncomfortable with them all agreeing.

That the gene sequence for enhancing infectivity was so small, the odds that it could be engineered are that much greater. Moreover, if the gene sequence(s) in question are from prior work and already well established, all the more reason to be able to engineer it.
Even though there are arguments about 98%, 99% similarity between the genomes of COVID-19 and related coronaviruses, the odds of just the right mutation having just the right infectivity are right up there with chimps typing a Shakespearean sonnet.
