The restrictions Canada has placed on obtaining, keeping, and using firearms failed entirely in the recent mass murder case in Nova Scotia. I refrain from using the murderer's name.
Canadian restrictions on gun ownership failed. The murderer had plead guilty to an assault charge in 2002. He paid a $50 fine, and served probation for nine months. He then had a lifetime ban on owning firearms. From nypost.com:
Authorities said Wortman did not have a police record, but information later emerged of at least one run-in with the law. Nova Scotia court records confirm he was ordered to receive counseling for anger management after pleading guilty to assaulting a man in the Halifax area on Oct. 29, 2001.
The guilty plea came on Oct. 7, 2002, as his trial was about to begin. He was placed on probation for nine months, fined $50 and told to stay away from the man, and also prohibited from owning or possessing a weapon, ammunition or explosive substances.
Mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada. The country overhauled its gun control laws after Marc Lepine shot 14 women and himself to death at Montreals Ecole Polytechnique college in 1989. Before the weekend rampage, that had been Canadas worst mass shooting.
Authorities have not released much information about what firearms the murderer used in his killings. We know he took one handgun and magazines from the RCMP officer he killed. The standard-issue handgun for the RCMP is the Smith & Wesson 5946 9mm. It is a stainless steel, double action only version of the S&W model 59 series. The magazine holds 15 rounds of ammunition. It has been reported the killer used one handgun and several long guns. From the CBC.ca:

Well if he had been on the super secret double prohibiting list.................
....Which is why we can only truly achieve our goal of complete public safety through house-to-house searches and confiscation of all weapons.... (Right after we get people to submit to mandatory virus testing. For the greater good, and all...)
I looked at the list and noticed that the FN FAL and its variants were not on the list. Nor were any Berettas or AK variants.
It seems the entire list bans mostly AR-15s and AR-10s.
“The country overhauled its gun control laws after Marc Lepine shot 14 women and himself to death at Montreals Ecole Polytechnique college in 1989.”
And firearms prohibitionists will not bother telling people that Gamil Gharbi (aka Marc Lepine) bought the Ruger Mini 14 semi automatic sporting rifle with a Firearms Acquisition Certificate given to him by a Montreal firearms officer who failed to conduct the required background check on him that would have likely revealed that Gharbi came from family background marked by physical and mental cruelty at the hands of his Algerian Muslim father, he had been turned down as a cadet for the Canadian military for mental instability, and was not able to hold down a job for long periods of time.
Also that the Montreal City Coroner determined that Gharbi’s use of a semi auto rifle had little or no impact on the death toll he achieved compared to poor response time by the police as they did not enter the computer sciences building at Ecole Polytechnique until 30 minutes after he began his rampage and ten minutes after he took his own life (the Montreal 911 centre gave police inaccurate address info as to where Gharbi was).
Here is a list I picked up yesterday. The FN is on the list way down.

Isn't leftist progressive rule grand! /S
Gamil Gharbi (aka Marc Lepine)
Son of an Algerian moslem father and a Canadian mother. He had a problem with women.
They are all based on the idea that some how, some way, a law on paper or some computer's hard drive will keep you safe from someone with murderous intent.
No "gun control" law will ever keep you safe. It is impossible.
Do you think posting a sign on the beach "No sharks allowed" would keep swimmers/surfers safe? Do you think posting a sign in the meadow "No wolves allowed" would keep a flock of sheep safe? Ok, obviously sharks and wolves can't read. But people can. So I guess laws against child abuse have stopped child abuse. Laws against taking street drugs have stopped the opioid crisis. Laws against domestic violence now keep partners and spouses safe. Laws against drunk driving have stopped those completely preventable accidents...
No??? But...???
Why in the world would anyone delude themselves into believing that someone with murderous intent, prepared to commit unspeakable acts of violence and break literally dozens of laws...would somehow be deterred or stopped by just one more "common sense" law? In what fantasy land of Unicorns farting gumdrop rainbows does a criminal stop when confronted by a sign, or a law? It is in their very nature as criminals - by definition they break laws!
The blindingly obvious result of this simple realization is that disarming law abiding citizens -- again by definition people who follow or obey "gun control" laws -- does not in any way make them safer. In fact it has been proven to increase crime across the board.
And yet, certain people keep pushing for more "gun control" using the notion of making the public safer. Bull***t. Stop lying. You, me, and the wolf stalking in the meadow know "gun control" has absolutely nothing to do with safety - unless you count safety for would-be tyrants with fascist dreams. You want to disarm law abiding citizens? Then stop jerking us off with this "safety" lie. Just come out and admit that you want to impose controls on the citizens and you don't think they'll stand for it. So before you can create your socialist/fascist utopia you've got to disarm us.
I don’t have links but the earliest reports indicated he shot the cop with a shotgun and then stole her weapons, which included the “assault weapon”.
Wonder how soon he will ban the lever action Winchester rifle as a moslem jihadi attacked Ottawa with a 30-30 rifle a few years back.
Information control and the lie are powerful tools of tyrants.
Being honest is the last thing you can expect of them.
Yes, but here in Alberta we aren’t going to comply. They did this illegally. I was talking to a Mountie yesterday and he said nobody is even going to attempt to enforce this, and our province is telling Ottawa to pound sand.
But first we have to find some way to get these citizen reprobates to confine themselves within their homes. Call it something like shelter in place..
It's for the children, doncha know.
In spite of what the Government Bureaucrats say, the purpose of gun controls are not to make one safe. It is to render one helpless to resists Governmental tyranny.
Some FN models are on the list. But notice that the vast majority are AR-15 and AR-10 variants. No AKs. No FAL variants (FNFAL, G1, STG-58, R1, L1A1, C1A1, Imbels, etc). Not even the FN FNG.
So if a guy rents a moving truck and runs over 100 people sidewalk, should we ban moving trucks? Should we ban automobiles because people drive drunk and kill people? Should we ban cell phones because kids are trying to text and drive and kill people?
And finally, do you trust this government AND ALL GOVERNMENTS IN THE FUTURE to NOT trample on your rights? Just look how far they are willing to go on this fake pandemic. People are being jailed for boating, going to church, walking on a hiking trail, and playing softball with their kids in the park.
Do you want the government to have that kind of power PERMANENTLY? Because that is EXACTLY what will happen when they manage to disarm Americans.
Then why was he out and about? Anyone who can’t be trusted to be armed should not be running around loose!
Unfortunately, FN-FAL has been on the prohib list for a long time.
