NEW YORK - Hundreds of lawsuits stemming from the coronavirus pandemic are rapidly amassing in state and federal courts, the first wave of litigation challenging decisions made early during the crisis by corporations, insurance companies and governments.
Claims have been filed against hospitals and senior-living facilities, airlines and cruise lines, fitness chains and the entertainment industry as of Friday, according to a database compiled by Hunton Andrews Kurth, an international law firm tracking cases that emerge from the pandemic. The volume and variety make painfully clear that, throughout the United States, the virus has caused widespread devastation and hardship, and that the full scope of its economic toll remains to be seen.
Complaints reach across industries and state lines. Some seek significant monetary damages. Others ask for a judge to correct actions alleged to be harmful or in violation of contractual agreements.
Here in New York, which remains the global pandemic's epicenter, more than 250 lawsuits have been filed - the most of anywhere in the nation by far. Among them, is a set of lawsuits brought by a nurse's union against the state and two hospitals. They say officials failed to appropriately protect hospital workers with sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure a safe workspace for those at higher risk of contracting the illness. A similar suit was brought by a union representing state employees in Alaska.

Every employer is hesitant to re-open because of the potential lawsuits from employees that may get sick and/or die from this.
Good luck with the nursing home lawsuits.
Cuomo and the legislature protected them from both civil AND criminal liability in the new budget.
Any lawyer bringing a Covid lawsuit must be shot on the courthouse steps. His staff must similarly be exterminated.
You would think they would go after China first. But no. Its all Americas fault you see...

How about lawsuits against State Governors for unconstitutional overreach?
Except for a few hard-hit areas, most of the stay-at-home orders have no legal or scientific validity ... so why aren’t they being challenged in court?
Whatever happened to “Question Authority”??
What's _REALLY_ been closed?
I'm work in North Jersey, Bergen county, the epicenter of it in NJ. What isn't open?
I can tell you what is open: Car dealers for sales and service. Home Depot/Lowes, Walmart, restaurants for take out, vets, hospitals, hardware, grocery, gas stations and auto repair. Farm/home/garden centers, dentists and opticians but emergency only stuff. Cell phone store? Really? That's essential, I guess so. I bought some flooring from Lumber Liquidators at the lowest point for traffic. The list goes on and on and on
I guess you can't go to the Mall, something I've not done in years.
My company has been open the entire time, all the front office types are working from home. I can't think of a single business in my town that has closed except the gym. I don't understand how this is some kind of death blow to the the economy when everyone I know hasn't stopped working except a handful my company laid off because sales fell off a cliff.
I agree. Lawyers profiteering on this, right now, rank right up there with the media as Enemies of the People.
The vile Ambulance chasers will be out in full force.
Main reason:
There's no money in it.
China would laugh at a lawsuit against them.
Ya wanna shut down the world expect some blowback. Tossing out consideration for all others is going to infringe on a LOT of lives.
Cuomo and the legislature protected them from both civil AND criminal liability in the new budget.
One day he will be a commoner like us all and then they can go after him civily and destroy him
I’m in west Hudson near the bottom of Bergen and the eastern edge of Essex; our local diner is closed, and some of the open businesses are operating with skeleton crews. Hair & nail salons, schools, theaters/halls (for weddings & such), churches, cemeteries, and government buildings are still closed (the latter except for appointment-only), and a lot of offices have empty lots - granted, people are probably working remotely there.
i’m for ANY lawsuit against any government for financial loss or civil liberties loss resulting from any unconstitutional governmental action ... and the Feds need to pretty much immunize all businesses from C-19 liability or their won’t be any businesses remaining ...
Woe, woe, woe, woe, If these lawsuits are against politicians for violating peoples right to assemble and run a business............THEN PROCEED and SUE their pants off!
Well, FWIW, I agree on the civil liability protection. I hope Congress offers it nationwide.
But the criminal liability protection... I have a huge problem with that. And Cuomo and Albany likely passed that one to cover the state’s fanny.
