Move comes after murder of 22 people in worst mass shooting in Canada’s history Canada has banned assault-style weapons following the murder of 22 people in the worst mass shooting in the country’s history, Justin Trudeau announced on Friday. “These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada,” said the prime minister. “Effective immediately, it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import or use military-grade assault weapons in this country.”

......................At present, the Firearms Act does not make a distinction between “military-style” weapons and other type of long guns – meaning the government would also need to add amend the law. Trudeau had also previously promised to ban the Ruger Mini-14 rifle, the weapon used in the 1989 École Polytechnique shooting in Montreal, in which 14 women were murdered. The move to heavily restrict access to certain firearms will probably prompt anger from the opposition Conservative party and Canada’s gun lobby – but a ban of certain weapons can be carried out through cabinet, bypassing the need for legislation.

“Justin Trudeau is using the current pandemic and the immediate emotion of the horrific attack in Nova Scotia to push the Liberals’ ideological agenda to make major firearms policy changes,” said the Conservative leader, Andrew Scheer, following Trudeau’s comments. “Taking firearms away from law-abiding citizens does nothing to stop dangerous criminals who obtain their guns illegally.” ...

Given the totalitarianism we’ve seen over the last month, I think it should be clear to everyone why the govt wants to disarm its citizens

““These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. “

Is that why the Canadian police have them?

The biggest problem with Canada is it still basically has the government of a colony. They never completely severed the ties to European monarchies. Much of it’s constitution is unwritten. It basically still has the British parliamentary system under the “crown.”

In reality, just like the British, many of their “rights” aren’t fully protected because they aren’t written down as law and the “crown” or his/her representatives can take them away at will.

In Canada, the “law” doesn’t always “protect” people. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms of Canada has a provision which allows the governments of Canada to violate them if a “need” is proven to benefit society.

And in addition, there is no protection of private ownership of guns in the Canada constitution.

You are correct.

But Canada’s jurisprudence also has well settled law against retroactive legislation in relation to both real and personal property. So the right of legal ownership of now prohibited firearms cannot be accomplished without the consent of the present owners. Current and future acquisitions can be affected by the ban, but no Canadian government will long survive its evolution towards a totalitarian state control of firearms that have no causal connection to public safety in the hands of law abiding citizens.

Additionally, what happened in new Zealand will also likely happen in Canada. The Liberals in Canada just do not have enough popular support to pull of a legislative move towards being a totalitarian state.

My understanding is that assault weapons were already banned, but this order is for semi-auto rifles.
