Furloughed workers looking to stay on unemployment rather than returning to work when asked will be stripped of their benefits in Iowa.
Thousands of furloughed employees in the state have been receiving unemployment benefits to help them make ends meet during the pandemic until the businesses they worked for are allowed to reopen. The state announced on Monday that furloughed workers who refuse to return to work when allowed out of fear of the coronavirus will have their unemployment benefits cut.
The Iowa Workforce Development noted that refusing to return to work over concerns of catching the virus will be considered a "voluntary quit," and those who quit their jobs are not eligible for unemployment benefits. The department asked that employers report workers who do not return as requested as soon as possible" to ensure they are listed as a person who quit.

NYS will never do this.
I have mixed emotions for someone that is high risk.
“Iowa to cut unemployment benefits for furloughed employees who don’t return to work when asked”
That’s kinda how I always assumed it worked.
Iowa Gov. Reynolds is politely saying business is going to be opened. The CV spread seems pretty well understood by now.
Shes in that magic spot where Dems are claiming shes killing people and cranks are telling to ignore an unmanageable spike in CV.
Opens the state up for wrongful death claims from those 55+ with pre-existing conditions. Thats like most of Americans over 55?
Good job.
I think this is going to set up some State vs Federal battles.
On a plus note, my office just decided that we are working well from home, and they are going to consolidate floors to save rent and make working from home optional on a permanent basis. I'm opting to work from home on a permanent basis.
WooHoo!!!
And her hair looks good in all her briefings? Where does she get it done?
This should be the case for ALL states
There are a number of exceptions for high risk folks.
This was just announced a couple hours ago and its national already.
Nope, they'll extend benefits indefinitely, then demand a fed bailout.
I would think there’s room there for a “reasonable accommodations” conversation for high risk people. If the employee is in an at-risk demographic and the employer can’t or won’t mitigate, it could be seen as a constructive discharge rather than voluntary separation.

Congratulations. Working from home is a blessing for those of us who have the discipline. It will improve your life (and your bottom line).
there needs to be some sort of “hold harmless” agreement for employers in case an employee does come down with ChinaVirus. If that were to happen it will probably be due to away from work exposure, but the company will be blamed and the courts will take the employees side.
High risk hubby has lost two high risk acquaintances since the epidemic started. Neither to WuFlu.
If it’s not WuFlu, and it likely won’t be, it’ll be something else.
“...and your bottom line...” That will be in direct proportion to the number of donuts consumed.
