The Office of the Director of National Intelligence confirmed on-record for the first time Thursday that the U.S. intelligence community is investigating whether the coronavirus outbreak, which has wreaked havoc across the globe, started as the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan, China.
“The entire Intelligence Community has been consistently providing critical support to U.S. policymakers and those responding to the COVID-19 virus, which originated in China. The Intelligence Community also concurs with the wide scientific consensus that the COVID-19 virus was not manmade or genetically modified,” a statement from the office of acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell said.
“As we do in all crises, the Community’s experts respond by surging resources and producing critical intelligence on issues vital to U.S. national security. The IC will continue to rigorously examine emerging information and intelligence to determine whether the outbreak began through contact with infected animals or if it was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan,” the statement said.
Fox News first reported earlier this month that there is increasing confidence that the outbreak likely escaped from the lab, not as a bioweapon but as part of a Chinese effort to show that its efforts to identify and combat viruses are equal or greater than those of the U.S. This would be at odds with claims the outbreak originated at a wet market nearby.
Fox News also reported previously that a full-scale investigation was underway, with intelligence operatives said to be gathering information about the laboratory and the initial outbreak of the virus. Intelligence analysts are piecing together a timeline of what the government knew and “creating an accurate picture of what happened,” sources said.

“Accident” this proves even Intel thinks this was done on purpose.
Of course it was a gain of function study that was let loose. Now they just need to figure out whether it was intentional or by accident.
Btw, one of their scientists was convicted of selling animals in January.
I still wonder if he was the designed scapegoat for this mess.

Dr. Fauci was the one arranging the research and signing the checks.
This could be good. Even if the US hasn’t cracked the Chinese communications systems (or doesn’t want to reveal that it has), there’s probably non-secure text messages from low level operatives telling their girlfriends they can’t meet them because they have to rush back to the lab because of an accident.

Eff saving face. A stupid concept involving lies.
If we have a virus from the lab that is the same as what is in the wild, I think that would be the smoking gun. Even then, if the virus was from the wild and it is in the lab, they knew about it beforehand and they didn’t warn anyone about it.
My personal opinion is that the release was an accident. I’ve seen some analysis suggesting that the virus was manipulated, but I’m not convinced.
The two big questions are:
1. Was the virus natural or man-made. Since this lab was undoubtedly messing with viruses (even if they weren’t trying to create bioweapons) there’s probably a lot of material in there which is natural and a lot which is edited. Which one is this? So far I think the weight of evidence is natural.
2. Was this released by accident or on purpose. I think it less likely that China would release it first in their own country, but you could argue they wanted to get it over with there and then let it devastate the rest of the world. I doubt it. The consequences would have been too unpredictable. But even if you could get over that issue, I really don’t see why they would have released it right next to the lab. If they were going to pretend it came from a market, it would have been much better to actually infect an animal and send it to a market closer to where these bats come from. Then it would have looked natural.

I’m thinking along the same lines as you. Think about what happens if we declare this was a willful act. What happens next is a global sh*tstorm and possible shooting world war.
Probably better for Trump to say behind the scenes we know the truth here which gives enormous leverage. It cripples our position to have the rats falling all over themselves defending the ChiComs and blaming Trump. Xi probably can’t believe the stupidity of these shallow fools
It was not done on purpose, this thing has been a disaster for the CCP government, as it is in the process of shredding their entire economy. Nobody is dumb enough to do this to themselves on purpose.

This was no doubt to many others in the CBRNE community I’ve talked too as a planned event that got botched.
It is postulated the release at home was done on purpose not by the Chicoms but but by those who are internal enemies of them to sabotage. Heard this through competent DOD source who is in the position to know. Don’t trust the media explanations so far. Investigation is still going on. Your conclusions are premature and what the Chicoms want to be accepted.
No, to imply this was done by an internal enemy of the CCP to sabotage the CCP is actually what the CCP wants people to believe, so that they are the victims along with everyone else and not responsible for what happened.
The CCP did enough on their own to facilitate this event and I know a few things that you will find out soon enough. We are going to get them red-handed along with their accomplices.
And there is going to be no getting out of it for anybody.
