Photo: Getty Images The Chinese military has accused an American guided-missile destroyer of “intruding into Chinese territory waters” near the Beijing-controlled Paracel Islands, saying the “provocative act” violated Chinese sovereignty.
The People’s Liberation Army’s Southern Theatre Command, which oversees the South China Sea, said the USS Barry destroyer intruded into “waters around the Paracel Islands without permission” on Tuesday, prompting the command to scramble air and sea patrols to “track, monitor, verify, identify and expel” it.
The warning came as Taiwanese media reported that the American vessel sailed through the Taiwan Strait twice in this month, followed both times by PLA warships.
“These provocative acts by the US side … have seriously violated China’s sovereignty and security interests, deliberately increased regional security risks and could easily trigger an unexpected incident,” a statement posted on the military unit’s WeChat social media account quoted Li Huamin, a command spokesman, as saying.

I despise articles that tell us what China thinks, claims or feels. China has absolutely zero claim to the South China Sea. They also “claim” that Taiwan is a “renegade province”.

The Chinese are working what I call “The Crazy Man Gambit.” When a sane person confronts a dangerous, delusional man, the last thing you want to do is point out the delusions. Generally, you play along. (I have witnessed cops dealing with delusional homeless men.) The problem is, the people on the tip of the spear, the Chinese military, have been bathed in propaganda and may believe the “expel” rhetoric. With today’s weapon systems, the guy who fires first wins. These confrontations could rapidly escalate. On the US’ side, we expect rational, legal actions. The other side is busy telling us they are not rational and the “legal” portion is not acknowledged. The US is the delusional one.
On the good side, the Chinese see Trump as a genuine threat. That should keep their operational orders down to harass only. Still, there is that one loose cannon with the weapons to make a statement.
I think we should be coordinating with the other players so there is always two or three ships sailing together and from as many nations. Blowing country A’s ship out of the water is one rash act. Blowing A, B and C ships out of the water would give even someone high on testosterone pause.
