When Common Core first crept upon us from the Gates Foundation and other coevals, and then came into being in most states for real in 2010, it was hailed as just the thing to turn the tide on America's falling educational standards. President Obama's longtime education secretary, Arne Duncan hailed it as this:
"the Common Core State Standards may prove to be the single greatest thing to happen to public education in America since Brown v. Board of Education."... Obama himself claimed it made everything so much better:
So bottom line is: higher graduation rates, higher college attendance rates, more money for Pell grants and work to make sure that the interest rate on student loans haven’t gone up; working to expand early childhood education and preschool; continuing to watch and work with states as they try to implement reforms to make K-12 better; holding colleges more accountable for giving information so that students can make good decisions. We’ve made a lot of progress. We have made a lot of progress in terms of making sure that young people across the country get the kind of great education that you’re getting here at Banneker.

HS ping.
Democrats are evil scum.
Fetgub has NO business in K-12
Common Core has been Math Armageddon.
Yeb Bush was a big proponent of Common Core, this was a bipartisan effort.
Doesn’t every 12th grader want to read EPA manuals?
The Common Core State Standards Initiative was started by the National Governors Association.
Not only is it a disaster from strictly an education standpoint but it is also largely anti-white and anti-American.
All Common Core was meant to do was to dumb down el/hi students thanks to the globalists who don’t want citizens capable of critical thinking.
It’s “common cr*p, not common core”.
Always always be aware of anything touted by “eddikashun degree” owners. We’re talkin’ a subject that at its best, barely approaches high school level.
Remember also, that Bill Ayers has a doctorate in this laughable “academic” major.
‘Nuff said.
I knew right away CC was gonna be a tremendous FAILURE, and guess what?
It WAS and IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“When Common Core first crept upon us from the Gates Foundation . . .’
The Gates Foundation has ruined already poor performing public schools. Now Bill Gates is on the news telling us how to run health care.
Gates is the poster child for confiscatory asset taxes.
That was one of it’s goals. Get Common Core adopted then insist that it works for as long as possible. Next when it’s determined that it is the failure that everyone knew it was, teachers will then have jobs repairing the damage that it did. After a few years of real math and Common Core falls down the memory hole, reintroduce it under another name, then repair the damage again, Repeat when necessary.
Excellent comment.
My Grandkids saw through Common Core like a plate glass window. Thank God they go to a very good school system that indeed, let the kids learn the “old fashioned way” — you know. multiply / subtract / divide, etc.
One time when asked by the teacher why my grandson did a simple division problem the old fashioned way..... he simply said it was quicker and easier. So THAT’s why he did it.
Exactly. It’s called eternal job security.
and he wrote his reply in cursive no doubt.
I am of the opinion that our education system is not set up to teach kids the skills needed to learn. Early grades should concentrate on basic skills such as reading skills, mental organization, focus, languages, music and memorization. Mid grades should start including more abstract concepts such as theory, models, library sciences. Later grades focus on the specifics of subjects and include practical application.
For example, my HS physics class spent two weeks on the math associated with swinging an ax and chopping wood. My geometry teacher spent two weeks on ratios and then moved into trig. My French teacher walked us through how to translate “The Scarlet Letter” into French. Having those foundations in a practical example, helped significantly move the theory into practice.
The two classes that I took that have made the most impact on my professional life are:
- Typing
- Speed reading
Both are practical and physical application of techniques.
The experience was interestingly enough repeated years before with my own siblings. My older brother and sister were taught reading in the early 1950s using the then new look say method. They both struggled to read. I, fortunately, was taught to read solely with phonics and had no problem reading well above my grade level. My mother saw the difference and knew the previous teaching method was inferior to phonics. However, when my niece and nephew entered school a new trendy variant of look say reading was back with the same poor results.
Your grandson sounds like mine. He’s really adept at math and when I asked him how he dealt with CC he said” I just do it my way”. He’s now graduating from a wonderful private school where he’s just thrived in math.
