Records released Monday reveal more details about the attack on two Baton Rouge police officers Sunday afternoon in which Ronnie Kato is accused of shooting one of his victims to death and then standing over the officer's dead body, continuing to fire an assault style rifle at close range.
The details are included in the affidavit of probable cause officers filed upon Kato's arrest. The suspect barricaded himself inside his house after the shooting, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours until he was ultimately taken into custody without incident Sunday evening and later booked into jail.
Kato, 36, had told his girlfriend that if she called police, he would mimic a man who ambushed Baton Rouge area law officers in 2016, according to a 2017 police report cited in the affidavit. Kato had told her he would "Gavin Long" officers, police said.

Police were looking for Kato on Sunday in connection with a domestic violence homicide just hours earlier 5½ miles away.

I wonder if police should wear a bullet proof helmet and body armor to protect themselves. I know S.W.A.T. does have helmets, but I don't know how feasible wearing them would be.
Certainly, in the jungles of Baton Rouge and New Orleans, the police need extra protection...
One police officer is dead and the other is in critical condition - the last I heard.
Short, quick trial. Death penalty. Execute him the following week. We can’t undo the harm this criminal has caused, but we can ensure he will cause no more crimes.
Helmets are for fragmentation and small arms not rifle fire. Most “body armor” is the same without a plate.
I’m thinkin’ body armor is standard. However I believe there is ammo readily available that will penetrate.
I am firmly of the opinion that after arriving on the scene of a POS like this give them one order to come out unarmed and if not just launch in a few 40mms. Don’t screw around and get killed so some lowlife clown gets to plug up the just us system.

My son, who’s a cop that’s answered more than a few domestics, calls it a “wifebeater shirt”.
And yet, the big takeaway from the newspaper article is “assault style rifle.” Now the meme has been set for all future reporting of the murder.
I think the term originated with Marlon Brando’s attire in “A Street Car Named Desire”.
When do we bring back the death penalty and use it immediately after conviction for everyone

I long for the “Good Old Days” when, in Texas anyway, if you shot AT a Cop you were not going to be taken alive. The Perps knew it, the Public knew it, and that’s just the way it was.
Lots of folks need hanging. Give only 30 days for appeal—then the noose. People with early release and who do more crimes—first in line for the rope. Cop killers next. Treason—Next. Mass murderers also up there.
