New York clinical trial testing heartburn medication as coronavirus treatment

A clinical trial is underway at major New York hospitals to test the efficacy of heartburn medication, in combination with the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine, on coronavirus patients, The Post has learned.

More than 150 people so far are taking part in the study, which began earlier this month and is being conducted by the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, the research arm of Northwell Health, according to a spokesman for the hospital system.

Researchers are trying to find out whether famotidine — the active compound in the over-the-counter heartburn drug Pepcid — acts as an inhibitor of COVID-19, similar to the way certain drugs block the replication of HIV/AIDS.

Patients in the study are being given the heartburn drug intravenously along with hydroxychloroquine at Northwell’s North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital, said David Battinelli, vice president and chief medical officer of Northwell.

I suggest Raw Horseradish.

Inhale it and when it mingles with the Clorox you have been inhaling, the results should be excellent.

OR NOT.

I haven’t done any pushups or pullups in the past 2 months and I have not come down with anything.

So maybe NO exercise will work.

OR NOT.

The ONLY thing I am sure of is that I am going to die.

When is the question.

It is a know fact that ANYBODY that had a cold during the Civil War has died.

I can’t be doing any worse than the ‘experts’

I heard that prilosec and other ppi drugs have anti viral properties. Statin drugs may too.

I used to have unbearable heartburn. I could get a wicked case just by drinking water. Foods like pizza were out of the question.

Then a friend recommended I take a Prilosec pill every other day. I did and the heartburn stopped. That was eight years ago. I can eat anything I want without the ‘burn. What a relief!

“This will cause a shortage!”

Nah, the Feds will just pull it off the market because it might be useful in the invisible Covid war and increase Trump’s chances for reelection. THAT will cause some major heartburn.

Beer in kegs is being thrown away. I’m not a doctor, I don’t play one on tv, but pepperoni pizza and half a keg of beer for lunch at 1 or 2 pm has never given me heartburn. That I remember. I may have stayed at a Holiday Inn but like I said, I don’t remember. I know half a gallon of chocolate ice cream and half a pan of brownies keeps me up all night. I blame it on the black walnuts. Just saying.

If your on a PPI like Prilosec (Omeprazole) by your doctor do you get lab work done every so often for checking kidney function?

I've been using Nexium for my severe reflux issues. It works great.

Geez. Let’s look at what I said.
“Zantac got pulled because is contained carcinogens”

Please look at your response. “ Would you eat a strip of bacon if it meant you could avoid unbearable suffering? Do you question nothing that the government tells you?”

Not sure if you’re talking in general. Or to me. But, I did not offer an opinion. I offered the reason it got pulled. People are very snippity.

i know what ya mean- i still can’t eat pizza, or tomatoes, or drink coffee- and certain other things, but still it’s nice to not get the constant acid attacks- it got so bad I’d shake, sweat- turn white- a waitress asked if i was alright once lol- felt like i was having heart attack- hurt right down my right arm- bad- went to doc- they said ulcer- been o n the stuff ever since- now i can eat way more stuff than i used to- just wish i could eat tomatoes though- love them- but still too rugged for my stomach I’m afraid-

ah right. I was prescribed it for acid reflux at one point and it did help. And I was told it can be taken for long periods of time but eventually should check kidney labs. Another medical professional said shouldn’t take it for more than two weeks because it can cause kidney failure.
My own research seems to be varied depending on the patient really. Better for some than others I guess. I have a relative who HAD to take it for long periods because a bleeding esophagal ulcer.

I have bleeding ulcers too- Doc there told me I’d never be off PPI’s because of it- but my goodness- they never warned me it could cause kidney damage- that’s probably what is causing it- (I get a ton of kidney stones too- i had though maybe the stones were causing the damage- but now I’m not sure- i had never heard PPI’s could cause damage)

Uggh- don’t wanna go to docs now to find out if it’s from the PPI’s or not=- what with all the virus junk going around either-

The only one that helps my son is Dexilant. Insurance doesn’t like to cover it. There are no generics. But, it’s supposed to help when nothing else will. It releases in 2 parts apparently. An immediate dose, then the long acting part kicks in for the rest of the day.

I don't blame you. maybe discuss it via telemed w/ doctor.

My understanding is that it causes a slow and gradual decline of kidney function. Here's one article on it. Proton-pump inhibitors increase risk of kidney damage

I'm not a doctor but my spouse is a RN, BSN and she also brought it to my attention. It is kind of tricky because the relative with the ulcers believes he got them from taking his heart meds. So you have to balance out all the risks with the pros. I have heard some say they take the Prilosec every other day. I'd find a way to talk to the doc without going in. It sounds like slow kidney decline could well be from one or other meds. There has to be some sort of medium or solution to balance out overall health better.

I had to read up on that one. Again, make sure he watches kidney numbers - ACR/GFR and BUN levels.

Thanks for the info about Antihistamines. My heartburn and my other intestinal problems are making me miserable tonight.

I’m prescribed Omeprazole but I also purchase Nexium and alternate them each day because Omeprazole isn’t working. Lately, Nexium isn’t strong enough.

I had a colonoscopy on New Year’s Eve and the surgeon prescribed a month’s supply of Protonix. I loved Protonix.

After this craziness has subsided, I’m considering seeing my General Practitioner and requesting a regular script of Protonix.
