I have been reading some historical works on Middle Eastern culture. It appears that Islam merely incorporated the current cultural approach and customs regarding women of that era in the Middle East.

Islam is mostly derivative in general. It cribbed from the Old Testament, from surrounding cultures... there's not much original about it. But it gave a patina of respectability to these practices, and elevated them from custom to divine law. For that we are ordered to be grateful and respectful.
