Politico: Everyone in Lansing admires Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s skills and just about everyone likes her

Anyone in the United States who thinks the coronavirus lockdown has led to an unconstitutional power-grab by local and state governments can handily point to Michigan and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as an example of bureaucratic overreach. She’s cracked down on landscaping, gardening, golfing, traveling from one home you own to another, and buying nonessentials like seeds and paint and car seats. (“Life-sustaining” abortion is exempt, of course.)

Sheriffs have announced they won’t enforce her overreaching executive orders. She’s said that she’s not going to sign any bill that takes authority away from her.

She’s also lobbying hard for Joe Biden’s vice president position and never misses a TV appearance.

You’d think there are people in Lansing who don’t appreciate her governing style, seeing as there was an #OperationGridlock protest in front of the capital. But according to a fawning piece in Politico Magazine, you can’t find anyone in Lansing, Democrat or Republican, who doesn’t admire Whitmer’s skills.

Hillary was also loved. She was the inevitable winner in 2016. The media told me so.

“Well, I appreciate the call, governor,” John says. “I tried to call the White House. I’ll be honest, I’m conservative. Always have been. I voted for President Trump. But I just wish he would stop with the petulance. You know, this is not the time—at all. And I would tell him that to his face.”

John continues, “I can’t understand the president saying … ‘The states have to have a plan.’ It can’t just be on the states. I mean, we’re the United States of America. We’re supposed to be united.”

Yea, well Lansing is the home of the U of M and is almost totally a liberal town. You drive around and people have signs in their windows demonstrating their hatred for conservatives.

Now, drive outside of Lansing into pretty much the rest of the state and Whitmer love is “not so much.”

Through the double doors of Whitmer’s office, on the left when you enter, stands a hulking mahogany bookshelf that tells her life story: family photos, two Spartan football helmets, autographed basketballs, a stack of books about Michigan, a Holy Bible, framed certificates, a miniature statue of Lady Justice, several beer mugs, and four Catholic prayer candles featuring saintly images of Whitmer’s “wise women”: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Detroit soul legend, Aretha Franklin.

Like asking North Koreans how they feel (or felt) about Kim Jung Un, just about everyone likes him as well.

People generally don’t march in the streets with guns where this is the case.

“She resembles an older style of politics. She wants to get things done without tearing people apart,” says House speaker Lee Chatfield, the Republican who has battled with Whitmer the last 15 months. “She’s the only Democrat I’ve seen placate the business lobby and the environmentalists. Seriously—nobody else can do it. I’ve seen her sit down with CEOs in suits, then have beers with people from the upper peninsula.”

It’s telling that Chatfield—one of Trump’s closest allies in Michigan—has gone out of his way to publicly back the governor’s decisions in recent weeks. When I ask about the politics of the situation, he doesn’t hesitate.

“Mark my words, it would be a missed opportunity for the Democratic Party not to consider Gretchen Whitmer for the ticket,” Chatfield says. “She’s the governor of a must-win state, and she’s polling very well here right now.”

For U of M, that would be the People’s City of Ann Arbor.

No tearing people apart? HA! Read her texts to that legislator from Detroit who thanked Trump for suggesting HCQ.

She’s a nasty piece of work.

Oops. Mea culpa!

We took our wife to Ann Arbor to see a cancer specialist and I totally got them mixed up. I was thinking of that experience and had the towns wrong.
