TORONTO/OTTAWA - The gunman in Canadas worst ever mass shooting began the weekend rampage that ultimately killed 22 people after his girlfriend escaped him when he assaulted her, a top police official said on Friday.
Police did not give details about the nature of the assault or how she escaped and fled into the woods. Local media said she had been tied up. The womans name was not provided. She is currently recovering from her injuries and cooperating with police.
It was a significant assault, and this individual female did manage to escape, and that could very well have been the catalyst to start the chain of events, Nova Scotia Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Superintendent Darren Campbell said in a news conference.
However, were open to all possibilities and were not excluding the possibility that there was any premeditated planning also involved, Campbell said in a news conference.
After the woman fled on Saturday night, she spent the night in hiding in the thick woods that surround the rural hamlet of Portapique, Nova Scotia, and only emerged on Sunday morning to call the 911 emergency number at about 6:30 a.m.
By then the gunman, 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, had killed 13 people in Portapique. Disguised in a police uniform and driving a fake police car, Wortman went on to kill nine more people on Sunday morning.

Read the article and Im surprised they didnt blame the shootings on Trump or Americans.
They’ll try.
Why don’t they just kill themselves?
For Christ’s sake!....
Just curious...has anyone said anything about drug use with this guy?

Wow. Sharp as a tack. Considering the gunman had a fake uniform and cop car, I’d say that’s premeditated.
Our Boy King has in other instances mentioned his continued commitment to more gun control, even though the perp likely stole the RCMP’s service pistol first and then got his hands on other RCMP guns. And I read an interview with someone whose brother died in that incident and that this person hid away, hoping that the police would come to his rescue, very pathetic situation that the Liberals and NDP and their friends in the media and academia are that great deal responsible for by not permitting citizens to defend themselves. You can imagine that the perp would have achieved a considerably smaller or no death toll at all in nearby Maine or New Hampshire or Vermont where there is constitutional carry.

Be patient.
The draconian RCMP who think they are better than just about any of their fellow Canadians as a police force( they are referred to as “members” as if they were red clothed phalluses onparade), have already begun to blame America.
Their Canadian Gun Control Laws do not Work.
The perp. did not have a Federal Firearms permit. Yet he illegally obtained one hand gun from Canada. The rest of his weapons were said to have been obtained in “ The United States” and illegally imported into Canada. The firearms were not identified , making the statement anti US propaganda.
Watch the RCMP continue to pillory legal , law abiding forearms owners in Canada, recommend instituting draconian penalties for apprehended firearms at the US Canada border.
The RCMP is over centralized with rural response times in the order of 2 to 3 hours to a call.
The RCMP work assiduously to deconstruct Canadian’s fundamental right of the use of deadly force as self defense , preserved in the Criminal Code of Canada. The RCMP projects an image of omnipotence. And ostensibly Canadians need to continue to be bleating sheep who should “shelter in place” and hunker down to wait three hours for the RCMP to arrive and get shot by a perpetrator. They are under-armed for the most part with no rifles in their vehicles. They call in Swat, and wait another 3-12 hours. Its a joke.
Its telling that not one Canadian managed to take out a personal firearm and draw down on the perpetrator during what became a 16 hour killing rampage.
The perpetrator , a lone gunman wearing a bogus RCMP police uniform, drove a fully equipped bogus RCMP patrol Car he had purchased at auction of end of service RCMP vehicles, restoring it as an almost perfect replica. This had the RCMP shooting at each other at one point at a fire-hall being set up by RCMP officers as a clearing station for information.
The fact is that these rural communities need to go back to the now abandoned County System , where the rural people were served by Sheriffs and their deputies in a decentralized model of law enforcement, with locals serving who know every back road in their county with response times at 20 minutes max.
The Anti US screeds by the RCMP will likely begin in short order, just to make sure that law abiding gun owners in Canada are forced to keep their mouths shut, as once again, Canadians are further denied their right of effective self defense. This propaganda softens up the public and makes them even more like bleating sheep, getting them ready for even more draconian gun laws instead of allowing and encouraging the public effective use of deadly force in self defense.
If self defense use of firearms is not encouraged and promoted, we in Canada will at some point have another single perpetrator tie up hundreds of police officers in the next massacre to come.
I feel sorry for RCMP officers in some sense. The liberal socialist a$$hats who run the RCMP will not even allow their off duty officers to carry a side arm.And Canadians definitely do not have a personal right to carry either outside of professional security.Just try to get a provincial permit to carry , the federal statute requires that in cases of protecting ones life, a right to carry “must issue.” But not one province issues self defense right to carry permits. The fix is in. And Canadians have been massively hoodwinked.
This makes a field day for crooks and madmen who are armed.
Smart Canadians are going out, taking the draconian Federal Firearms course, getting their restricted weapons permits, and putting in range time. At least a few of us will be ready willing and able if needed.
So much for the pomposity that the RCMP has become. They are seemingly amazed and chagrined that their “members” pomposity does not stop bullets.
The RCMP needs an overhaul from the top, and real warriors put in place who will not be dictated to by liberal socialist politicians without publicly exposing such politicians.
There is no 2nd amendment in Canada. Ownership of firearms is a privilege granted by the Crown, not a right. Its time for Canadians to stand up and change that.
And we Americans need to look at what happened in Nova Scotia and know what liberal socialism does to a people. Its horrible.
The Canadian federal and provincial governments expect us to simply lay there and get shot to death.May the US 2nd amendment never , ever be compromised. Its a gift from God himself. The Canadian socialists who run the RCMP are as Godless as they come. Never, ever America, never make your people into bleating sheep like Canadians have become.
Here we go, gun control when there arent any
Gun control where they’re aren’t any is right.
...........unless you are a police officer, few of whom can shoot straight when out of breath.
You can imagine that the perp would have achieved a considerably smaller or no death toll at all in nearby Maine or New Hampshire or Vermont where there is constitutional carry.>>>>
Hovong lived in both Canada and Vermont, I can assure you that in Vermont the sack of sh*t perp would have been dropped within the hour, police uniform or no. And there also would ba a good chance no one would ever find out who did it.
I am a Californian so my access to firearms is more
limited than most Americans but I can still purchase
a handgun legally. On Facebook I saw a video featuring
a distraught man who had found the body of his brother
who was a victim of the shooter. The brothers had been
visiting their dad who lived in the rural area. The
brothers had heard a gunshot and saw smoke from a fire.
The victim brother had said he was going to investigate
so he walked toward the direction of the smoke and
gunfire sounds. When the victim did not return to the
father’s home the CBC interviewed brother went looking
for him and found his body, dead from a gunshot wound.
He told the CBC interviewer he became scared and ran
away and hid to avoid being shot himself.
I read many responses from Facebook peeps who
comiserated with the distraught surviving brother. It
was sad and I offered my condolences in a post. I also
stated that I hoped that when the time was right and
he had sufficiently recovered he would supply his
father with a firearm to protect himself from a future
madman. One of the reasons that I suggested that he
provide a firearm for his dad was to see what kind
of pushback I might get from any of the other
respondents. I was pretty surprised that nobody replied
to my pro self-defense post, not one way or the other.
And yet despite Russell Williams, this clown and others there are still Canadians who think the death penalty is wrong.
Any thought on Post #13?
Sounds like that Mounties screwed the pooch on the warning.
“Mounties tweeted; people died.”
My one,and only,"experience" with Canada and firearms occurred about 10 years ago.Driving from North Dakota into Manitoba I obviously had to be cleared by Immigration and Customs. For some reason they sent me to "secondary"...the very first time I had ever had a lick of trouble entering a foreign country. The facility was basically deserted except for me and a pickup truck with Alaska plates.
For about 90 minutes they proceeded to grill me about firearms while they pulled apart my car.Question, after question, after question. They even demanded the password to my laptop and told me that if I didn't provide it they'd seize it.
Mind you, they were always civil..even polite...but they surely let me know that they were in charge and that they had something on their mind.
After 90 minutes they let me enter..and I've never had a problem since (I've entered Canada about a dozen times since).
Given that I have a very common name the only think I can think of is that a guy...an American...with my name was on some kind of watch list.
My wife speaks of the time when she and her ex husband drove to AK about 25 years ago. Their moving van was completely unloaded and all content was thoroughly looked at.
Fortunately, unlike your wife's vehicle, the car I was driving was just an ordinary sedan with one suitcase and a laptop inside. And no guns! ;-)
Why is it practically all of these “lone male” mass murders start with the rejection of a girlfriend?
Every time a perp’s girlfriend goes thru something like this, we need to appreciate how our ancestors frowned on loose sex outside of solid marriages. The girlfriend must have been totally unable to discern men of good character.
