Gunman started Canada's worst mass shooting after his girlfriend fled

TORONTO/OTTAWA - The gunman in Canada’s worst ever mass shooting began the weekend rampage that ultimately killed 22 people after his girlfriend escaped him when he assaulted her, a top police official said on Friday.

Police did not give details about the nature of the assault or how she escaped and fled into the woods. Local media said she had been tied up. The woman’s name was not provided. She is currently recovering from her injuries and cooperating with police.

“It was a significant assault, and this individual female did manage to escape, and that could very well have been the catalyst to start the chain of events,” Nova Scotia Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Superintendent Darren Campbell said in a news conference.

“However, we’re open to all possibilities and we’re not excluding the possibility that there was any premeditated planning also involved,” Campbell said in a news conference.

After the woman fled on Saturday night, she spent the night in hiding in the thick woods that surround the rural hamlet of Portapique, Nova Scotia, and only emerged on Sunday morning to call the 911 emergency number at about 6:30 a.m.

By then the gunman, 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, had killed 13 people in Portapique. Disguised in a police uniform and driving a fake police car, Wortman went on to kill nine more people on Sunday morning.

Oh, heck, a significant % of women, even some with considerable raw intelligence, prefer “bad boys”. Our ancestors’ mores helped tamp that down, but, it’s always been true.

To be fair, it works the other way too (guys who prefer “bad girls”). Probably more so.

Not buying it. He had a police uniform and a fake cop car. He didn’t just pull those out of a hat.

The Canadian Border patrol has very wide powers of search, seizure and arrest.

They DO NOT need to have probable cause.

They don’t like the kind of sunglasses you wear? They can tear your vehicle apart piece by piece and make you pay to have it put back together.

And they do not even need to justify tearing your car apart by finding anything.

Always cooperate. If you need an attorney at any point, call one and say nothing.

You were likely simply randomly searched. They do that to every nukbered cout of vehicles , decided before hand.

Best time to cross is when they are very busy.Open all your windows weather permitting so they can see inside, Take off yout gat an sunglasses so they can ID you, and “sir” or “mam” them, looking them straight in the eye when you answer questions. That wll get you by most of the time.

Yes,I understand all that.At any international border...including our northern border...you basically have no rights. And as for cooperating...of all the times I've crossed an international border (perhaps 100 times) I've been less that cooperative only once. That was when I flew to South Africa to see my girlfriend...during apartheid...and encountered an Afrikaner immigration official that copped an attitude with me and I copped one back. He let me in...but only after I did a quick attitude adjustment fearing that he was about to deny me entry.

The only reason that my encounter at the Canadian border sticks in my mind is why they even *wanted* to tear my car apart and why they even *wanted* to ask me dozens of questions about guns and why they even *wanted* to demand the password to my laptop.I fully understood that I was subject to Canadian law and I had no reason to believe that they were violating Canadian law.

Yes,I might have been stopped randomly...every 50th car,perhaps...or someone with my name might have been on a watch list.

Portapique, Nova Scotia....recognized the name of the place immediately, having camped in the area in the early 70’s. Memorable because the place name is taken from “porc-epic”, the French for porcupine and easily pronounced Porky Pig for fun word play.

Wasn’t even a village back then and a quick check reveals that it hadn’t grown much since, with a current winter population of about one hundred souls. They’ve lost about 20% of their population in this one incident. The devastation must have directly affected nearly every one in the community. May the Lord grant them comfort and mercy.

I hear you. An unnamed commentator stated that Wortman had “a problem with alcohol” in one of the news reports I read. smalldeadanimals.com is a Canadian blog I read almost daily and they’ve posted a few stories about this mass murderer.

Somehow I didn’t know you were Canadian. It sucks that Canada has turned into New Zealand, lol. My son-in-law’s mother is Canadian and she’s a lovely woman, but a little too “patchouli oil & Birkenstocks” for me.

Wow. Sharp as a tack. Considering the gunman had a fake uniform and cop car, I’d say that’s premeditated.

He had them for years.

Hard to call that premeditated, unless he had sort of a general idea he might want to use them in crime someday.

Lots of people collect police paraphanalia.

He had considerable resources.

His business had been shut down for a month.

Maybe this was set off by the lock-down excess...

There is no 2nd amendment in Canada. Ownership of firearms is a privilege granted by the Crown, not a right. Its time for Canadians to stand up and change that.

The right of an Englishman to arms was well recognized until after WWI.

Then the elite decided to eliminate it, because they feared uprisings.

It is all well documented. Canadians had the an Englishman's right to arms until about 1934, which was when registration of handguns came into effect.

I had that happen to me, once.

I was in a small American town you could only drive to from Canada.

I was taking a lot of pictures, because I was thinking about purchasing some real estate.

I think some town resident did not like me taking pictures and dropped a dime on me as some sort of American spy. I had a DOD sticker on the truck.

After they searched everything, and my laptop, and my combination gun (the officer did not know what a "combination gun" was), it was all just fine.

I agre, and in Canada they passes the Firearms Control Act i n 1934 which sanctioned and regulated ownership of hand guns.

In Canada we need to get rid of the Firearms Control Act and substitute it with a second amendment like rule based on the natural God given right of self defense.
