Navy recommends reinstating Crozier as captain of USS Theodore Roosevelt

The Navy has recommended reinstating Capt. Brett Crozier as commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, according to reports, in a move that would be unprecedented.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael Gilday and acting Navy Secretary James McPherson made the recommendation to Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Friday when briefing him about the results of the investigation into the coronavirus outbreak aboard the aircraft carrier. Esper asked for more time to consider whether to reinstate Crozier, the Times added.

In a statement Friday afternoon, chief Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said Esper is awaiting a written copy of the investigation to make a decision.

“This afternoon, Secretary Esper received a verbal update from the acting secretary of the Navy and the chief of naval operations on the Navy’s preliminary inquiry into the COVID-19 outbreak on the USS Theodore Roosevelt," Hoffman said.

"After the secretary receives a written copy of the completed inquiry, he intends to thoroughly review the report and will meet again with Navy leadership to discuss next steps. He remains focused on and committed to restoring the full health of the crew and getting the ship at sea again soon.”

Following the reports, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith (D-Calif.) called on Esper to reinstate Crozier "immediately." A congressional aide said Smith has not yet been briefed on the investigation.

"While Capt. Crozier’s actions at the outset of the health crisis aboard the TR were drastic and imperfect, it is clear he only took such steps to protect his crew," Smith said in a statement. “Not only did Captain Crozier have the full support of his crew, he also attempted to work within his chain of command. During this time of crisis, Capt. Crozier is exactly what our sailors need: a leader who inspires confidence."

Once fired, you could never trust an officer to follow the President’s command.

Yeah. It’s all liberals lining up behind this Crozier guy. Adam Smith, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer... that’s a whole line of red flags as far as I’m concerned.

We now know that assumption was false. Modly (or another one of his superior officers) “informed the world”.

No, the San Francisco Chronicle did it, with Crozier's 5 page mass-mailed, conveniently leaked diatribe.

The recommendation for reinstatement came from Admiral Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations.

East Coast, Catholic, Harvard grad. Probably a Dem.

If Adam Smith is recommending Crozier’s reinstatement the guy shouldn’t be in command!!!

Was Modly an Obama guy? Was Crosier an Obama guy?

Personally, I wish ALL the Obama guys would resign so we could get back in fighting shape and have parts for our airplanes again.

"When he fired Crozier, Modly publicly justified the move by saying the letter was sent to “20 or 30” people, something Modly called “just not acceptable.”

"But a copy of the letter obtained by The Washington Post last week showed Crozier sent it to the three admirals and copied it to seven captains."

If Captain Crozier can show he respected the chain of command and in no way tried to disclose the readiness of the Roosevelt, he is not at fault here.

Unless he didn’t send it by secure means. Then he is indeed at fault.

He screwed up, multiple times, but all of this may be to cover up for the deep state dept screw up.

Say... If Capt Crozier has a e-mail with him questioning shore leave in VN over concerns of CCV, Would we ever know?

Can anyone confirm how he sent his letter? Secure or insecure?

WTF is this FAKE news! If this is truly real, the USN is more far gone than I thought. Isn’t 20% of the fleet non-deployable (SUNK) by Corona anyway?

You left out United States Naval Academy. He was nominated for Chief of Naval Operations during the Trump Administration and confirmed unanimously by the Senate. He joined the Navy during the Reagan Administration.

Makes no difference to me. The Captain acted irresponsibly. The fact that mr trump, with no service, a great admirer of the military, suggests that he was only “having a bad day” does not make his actions any more responsible.

Those of us with military experience know what the penalty would be if we did the same thing.

I assure you that no commander will ever trust this captain again knowing that he has no qualms about contacting the press when he has an issue.

The guy that put our national security at risk by informing the world that we had a crippled war ship.

The irony is - the ship wasn’t even crippled or close to being so. out of 4800 sailors aboard a crowded ship, a total of 660 tested positive for coronavirus, and 60% of those had no symptoms. A total of 5 went to sickbay/hospital - and one died.

Crozier cried wolf, and somebody (himself?) then leaked it to the press.

And yet it was the Chief of Naval Operations, an admiral with 35 years of Navy experience who recommended reinstating him to the Secretary of Defense.

Doesn’t the captain have authority to cancel shore leave at his discretion?
