The Navy has recommended reinstating Capt. Brett Crozier as commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, according to reports, in a move that would be unprecedented.
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael Gilday and acting Navy Secretary James McPherson made the recommendation to Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Friday when briefing him about the results of the investigation into the coronavirus outbreak aboard the aircraft carrier. Esper asked for more time to consider whether to reinstate Crozier, the Times added.
In a statement Friday afternoon, chief Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said Esper is awaiting a written copy of the investigation to make a decision.
This afternoon, Secretary Esper received a verbal update from the acting secretary of the Navy and the chief of naval operations on the Navys preliminary inquiry into the COVID-19 outbreak on the USS Theodore Roosevelt," Hoffman said.
"After the secretary receives a written copy of the completed inquiry, he intends to thoroughly review the report and will meet again with Navy leadership to discuss next steps. He remains focused on and committed to restoring the full health of the crew and getting the ship at sea again soon.
Following the reports, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith (D-Calif.) called on Esper to reinstate Crozier "immediately." A congressional aide said Smith has not yet been briefed on the investigation.
"While Capt. Croziers actions at the outset of the health crisis aboard the TR were drastic and imperfect, it is clear he only took such steps to protect his crew," Smith said in a statement. Not only did Captain Crozier have the full support of his crew, he also attempted to work within his chain of command. During this time of crisis, Capt. Crozier is exactly what our sailors need: a leader who inspires confidence."

The president had already said that he might intervene to reinstate Crozier.

So, will there be some consequences in his chain-of-command if what you write is correct?
No, I don’t think so.

I think so. Modly got fired, did he not?
That was the Acting Secretary of the Navy, Thomas Modly.
Unreal. The Navy keeps flipping the finger to Trump. Backing down is beyond idiotic. He is an embarrassment to the Navy.
Asking in private is one thing. The CNO who let this out into the press is no better than that goober Crozier. His head should be on the chopping block next.
The red Chinese navy must be high-fiving over the condition of the USN.
The guy that put our national security at risk by informing the world that we had a crippled war ship.

We now know that assumption was false. Modly (or another one of his superior officers) “informed the world”.
Wow ,that was a turn around.
There’s a good chance that the reinstatement came via the Commander-in-Chief.
From April 6th
“President Trump says he might intervene in fired Navy captain’s case”
“The commander in chief said Monday that he will be calling the defense secretary to learn more about a Navy commanding officer’s sudden relief, because he doesn’t want an otherwise outstanding captain’s life destroyed by one mistake.
President Donald Trump told reporters that he reviewed Capt. Brett Crozier’s personnel records after acting Navy secretary Thomas Modly removed him as commanding officer of the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt. Crozier sent a letter outside classified channels requesting help as coronavirus cases spread on his ship, which acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said might have broken military law.”

The Navy would be FAR better to move forward. Imagine the ramifications in the already weak fleet mindset if the idea gets out that if a crew doesn’t like a change in captains, they can stamp their feet, livestream on Facebook, and they get their way. A terrible precedent.
This won’t change until we have the next naval disasters like we did in early WWII. The pussies are firmly in charge.
I half expect them to put that grinning idiot Crozier back in charge.
Nope. President Trump personally looked into the situation.

Absolutely correct. Its not even a close call. I dont have much confidence in esper. This is the same clown who announced to the world that DoD would protect LTC Vindman for going outside the chain of command and sabotaging the President.
Like mattis, trump will end up regretting appointing esper.
Well if that is the case then things are different.
I agree. If the Navy has confidence in his ability, they should give him a command of similar responsibility—another carrier, even—but not the previous one.
The recommendation for reinstatement came from Admiral Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations.
agree post 13
yeah,
the ship is still in Guam !
Did they run out of captains? How about they gey attacked by another ship? Will this clown leak to the media that they are under atrack by another ship??
Yes, the acting Secretary of the Navy, Modly.
A new standard — the Social Media driven Navy.
