“We’ve been competing against other states, against other nations, against our own federal government for PPE — coveralls, masks, shields, N95 masks — and we’re not waiting around any longer. And we’re no longer interested in the progress that we were seeing in the past.”
That was California governor Gavin Newsom in an April 7 MSNBC appearance with Rachel Maddow. As Newsom added, “In the last 48 hours we have secured –through a consortia of nonprofits and a manufacturer here in the state of California – upwards of 200 million masks on a monthly basis that we’re confident we can supply the needs of the state of California, potentially the needs of other western states.”
As it happened, the manufacturer wasn’t exactly “here in the state of California.” The manufacturer was BYD, “Build Your Dreams,” a Chinese company not known for making personal protective equipment. Newsom wasn’t revealing details of the $1 billion deal, which as John Myers of the Los Angeles Times noted, “will cost taxpayers 30 percent more than the governor’s January budget allotted for infectious diseases for the whole fiscal year.”

He wants to keep the financial details secret? Someone should ask him how much is being kicked back/laundered to U.S. players. He will indignantly reject the question. The followup would then be, “Why else are you hiding the money? How can expect trust without full accountability?”
BILLIONS and BILLIONS to countries that want us DEAD China and Iran for instance. I will NEVER understand how this came to be nor why we don’t off their heads.
The masks probably have the virus built into them.

This thing is over except in those states like California where the governor is doing $1 billion in money laundering with the Chinese for masks that are the wrong type and probably defective and will never be delivered. He says 200,000 masks a month!!
He forgot to ask the state legislature before wiring some $495 million to the Chinese.
Meanwhile in Newport beach some 40,000 people showed up at the beach!! On a friday and the reporter who was wearing a mask while everyone else was in their swim trunks (men!) or bikinis (women)!!! said that was double the number of people from yesterday. She looked silly.
You can go golfing this weekend in Ventura. The beaches have already been opened.
The media and mayor are driving this hysteria while the people know it is over.
Re your #17; I grew up inside the Loop before there was a Loop everybody’s Dad or Mom or both worked for the government one way or another. The corruption was well known to everybody as just another part of daily life.
Used to be if you saw a limousine it was some really important person, like a foreign leader or ambassador. But then came LBJ and suddenly there were limos everywhere.
In a word, we have become a kleptocracy.
