Trump administration considers leveraging emergency coronavirus loan to force Postal Service changes

The Treasury Department is considering taking unprecedented control over key operations of the U.S. Postal Service by imposing tough terms on an emergency coronavirus loan from Congress, which would fulfill President Trump’s longtime goal of changing how the service does business, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Officials working under Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who must approve the $10 billion loan, have told senior officials at the USPS in recent weeks that he could use the loan as leverage to give the administration influence over how much the agency charges for delivering packages and how it manages its finances, according to the two people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the talks are preliminary.

Trump has railed for years against what he sees as mismanagement at the Postal Service, which he argues has been exploited by e-commerce sites such as Amazon, and has sought to change how much the agency charges for delivery packages. (Amazon’s founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.)

There goes cheap delivery for Amazon. And that China subsidy definitely ain’t happening anymore. That could help the American logistical supply chain.

Keep the post office.

Renegotiate the deals with amazon and UPS and FedEx

END the prepayment of the healthcare. USPS employees are supposedly guaranteed healthcare for the next 70 years. At least put half or 75% of iit back into the budget, and keep the rest, assuming it is there. F-ckers in Washington probably spent it.

END the "developing Nation" BULLSHIT free shipping scam. NO more free shipping from shithole China and shithole Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan. etc.

I am told how important the junk mail is to funding the post office. But it occupies the primary focus of their time.

Add an apartment complex with 150 units that’s 150 slots they have to stuff with that. If they were only inserting legitimate mail into each not everyone is going to get any certain days.

I don’t remember if it was Chuck Schumer Joe Biden who defended junk mail a decade ago saying that old people like it because that’s the only mail they get some days.

Yep.

Small wonder postal workers don’t seem as satisfied with their labors as in bygone days when what they did really mattered to the people they were delivering to.

Trust progressives to think people are so desperate without government that they just wait with baited breath for its merest touch.

But before government became so “responsible” and retirement for all became a thing (among other stuff) extended families and neighbors kept each other in mind in most places.

You have some ideas worth considering there. However there is need for more, not less “to the home” delivery. Let USPS deliver everything from sandwiches to pills, change to on-demand as well as route-based and do mail a couple days a week. And grow their pick-up business, lots of home-based businesses like eBay sellers need outgoing more than incoming services

Junk mail is 95% of what gets delivered here.

My wife tends to hoard the stuff.

It’s DOA when I get my hands on it.

Another expert on the USPS who has never walked a foot of a mail route . Come along on my route and you can deliver some of the 100’s of Amazon packages I deliver in a day. That is if you can fit inside the truck with all those mass mailed ads.

Get rid of the clerk that sort of helped me today.

It always takes major effort on my part to refrain from saying....”And you wonder why the Post Office is going belly up!”

There is absolutely no need in this era for 6 day a week mail delivery. The savings (just in vehicle mileage/costs alone) would be tremendous.

A good insight is to compare the attitude of USPS workers vs the folks at the United Parcel store.

You are totally clueless. You tell me how that would be accomplished? Go apply at the USPS. You won’t last a month.

In the real world, half the volume would mean half the employees.

And that’s about the drop since 2000.
