Facebook is trying to prevent in-person gatherings, but there are too many posts to block.

A spokesperson with Facebook had initially said hey received instructions by the state governments advising that in-person gatherings break lockdown and social distancing laws in place as a reaction to the coronavirus, and those events should be removed. Anti-quarantine posts have been removed for protests in California, Nebraska, and New York.

Facebook faces issues enforcing the removal of posts and events that violating social distancing due to to the number of posts being made, and the differences in laws state-by-state.

Anti-quarantine protests being organized through Facebook in California, New Jersey, and Nebraska, are being removed from the platform on the instruction of governments in those three states because it violates stay-at-home orders, Facebook spokesperson @andymstone tells @donie.

— Oliver Darcy (@oliverdarcy) April 20, 2020

“We [Facebook] reached out to state officials to understand the scope of their orders, not about removing specific protests on Facebook. We remove the posts when gatherings do not follow the health parameters established by the government and are therefore unlawful.”

Has anyone else noticed the ACLU has been conspicuous by their silence? After all isn’t CIVIL LIBERTIES their thing? Why haven’t they called for the RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE to be balanced with efforts at eradicating the Chinese flu?

Facebook should be classified as a publisher rather than a “neutral platform” which they are not.

the president, governors, mayors, and sheriffs have emergency powers during which some rights may be restricted. This has been true in wars, natural disasters, and pandemics. Why would the ACLU waste time and money?

I read ‘received instructions from local governments’ and thought what the hell! The only reason that bookface would follow any instructions is if they came from socialists like themselves. Can you imagine the response if Trump asked them to do something, let alone instructed them?

The American Criminal Lovers Union only goes after Republicans and conservatives.

It’s what they do. Even if there are emergency powers, they are not absolute, and the ACLU is supposed to work to temper those powers with civil liberties. What? Eugene V. Debbs’ right to run for POTUS from jail during a war is worth defending, but the right of some good ol’ boys to cat fish in Lake Michigan during a pandemic, so long as they observe social distancing, is not? Emergency powers are not the power to be arbitrary and capricious without any justification.

well you use a lot of subjective language.

My point was there is a lot of experience and history with this and the ACLU decides whether you have a chance in court or not.

What is the conservative legal group doing?

What is it you want your president or governor to do differently?

Only in their dreams. If anything this is doing three things:

  1. Allowing Trump to show a raw display of intelligence, competence, and stamina that's nothing short of miraculous in a soon-to-be 74 year old man. How Trump does it is beyond impressive. He's doing these ad-hoc news conferences that go on for an hour or more on a daily basis that are occurring at the end of what you know are very long days and he always appears alert, articulate, and in full command of the facts. This would be a demanding performance to ask of someone 20 years his junior.

Contrast this with his presumptive opponent Joe Biden, who even in his carefully rehearsed and scripted "interviews" and recordings appears barely able to form a coherent sentence. There's absolutely no way this man is fit for the job and everyone knows it.

  2. It's exposing the blatant bias and hostility of the "fake news" media to the public for all to see. I'm not sure they even realize how foolish they appear to the average viewer and how they continue to shred whatever remaining credibility they have with the public. Every question is some cynical "gotcha" insinuation against a man and his team who are clearly doing a heroic job in extraordinary circumstances.

  3. It is giving Mike Pence an amazing platform to showcase his own executive skills, competence, and human decency that will not be soon forgotten. Pence 2024 becomes more and more likely with each day's performance.

I’m 11,000 miles away from the nearest governor. Despite that, I’m subjectively outraged by the lilliputian restrictions put on citizens of Michigan, for example. There is no compelling reason to forbid house painting, fishing or gardening. Or to permit sailing but not motorboating. If the ACLU is not interested in curbing these abuses of emergency powers, then some conservative group ought to be. And the right to peaceably assemble to petition a redress of grievances ought to be insisted on, not censored on facebook.

When did GUIDELINES mutate into LAWS?

When did Governors become law-makers?

When did we shred the Constitution?

I don’t agree with everything every governor has done. I merely state their powers.

Find a group to bring case. good luck. Sounds like you have no standing in Mich.
