Nearly all NY coronavirus patients suffered underlying health issue, study finds

A new study by a medical journal revealed that most of the people in New York City who were hospitalized due to coronavirus had one or more underlying health issues.

Health records from 5,700 patients hospitalized within the Northwell Health system -- which housed the most patients in the country throughout the pandemic -- showed that 94 percent of patients had more than one disease other than COVID-19, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Data taken from March to early April showed that the median age of patients was 63 years old and 53 percent of all coronavirus patients suffered from hypertension, the most prevalent of the ailments among patients.

I’m not sure how meaningful this is. The percentage of people 65 and over who have high blood pressure is really high.

“The prevalence of hypertension increases with advancing age to the point where more than half of people 60–69 years of age and approximately three-fourths of those 70 years of age and older are affected.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK9636/

Since most victims are over 65, most victims have high blood pressure. That doesn’t even account for other factors (diabetes) that are highly correlated to age.

I heard a doctor today on the radio saying that he didn't think that hypertension (high blood pressure) itself is the problem with coronavirus deaths, but that people who have high blood pressure often have other problems, such as diabetes, obesity and respiratory issues, that do contribute to coronavirus deaths.

They never say if it is controlled hypertension (via BP meds) or uncontrolled (no meds). I sure wish they would provide that info.

We destroyed a $22 trillion economy over a strain of the flu that primarily kills elderly residents in nursing homes.

NYSDOHcovid19- tracker- the stats are stunning.I was surprised how honest the reporting was until they lumped everyone who died in the past two months.

I think if people would go back and use a lot of the Italy death-data....you’d see the same basic story. At one point, about six weeks into their episode, they noted the average age of the dead at around 80 years old.

The Italians were also noting that people who used beta blockers were at a fair amount of risk.

the hypertension connection makes total sense. one of the co-moribidities which surprised me early on was hypertension. that was in the early data, i used to make my own morbidity calcs.

according to the papers i’ve seen here and others i’ve looked up myself, the basic research indicates that covid attacks the ace2 enzyme receptor, which basically regulates the vasoconstrictor/vasodialator conversion on the angiotensin pathway.

it would seem logical to me, that if you already can’t dilate your vessels at well—and the virus takes away this ability completely—all of a sudden a lot of organ systems are in danger. the disease, imo, exacerbates this already dangerous precondition.

this is also why the actual bio-science supports the use HCQ against the virus, because it apparently alters the ace2 enzyme to protect it, and all the organs employing it, protecting as a side effect against the covid virus’ attack point on the cell. you have to be careful with hypertension though, as it also probably limits the angiotensin pathway as well, so dosage and a lack of this pre-condition is apparently in order.

not a doctor, just an engineer doing my own research on the on corona virus drugs for purposes of informing my own medical decisions.

Have any studies been done on cholesterol meds and their relationship to covid deaths?

What makes me ask is the morbidity according to age and sex.

More men are dying than women. More men take cholesterol- lowering meds.

More people over the age of 50 are dying. Most men start taking the cholesterol meds around age fifty.

Is there any correlation?

Is anyone studying this? Cholesterol meds are often taken by folks with the co-morbidities of excessive weight and diabetes. How are these factors interwoven?

I have noticed that omission too.

Most people walking around today have an underlying health issue of some kind.

To my way of thinking it would be just the opposite; namely, that vasodilation, compounded by the body's own response to the virus, produces a dangerous malperfusion of the organs, exacerbated by pneumonia which lowers oxygen delivery to the tissues. It's vasoconstriction that's needed, which is the body's natural way of getting more oxygen to the tissues.

Being overweight is a serious contributing factor because a bigger body mass means more oxygen is needed. And most type-2 diabetics are overweight, many of them morbidly so.

I think these anti body tests are showing many already had a mild case of some sort....makes this a very mild flu.

What are your thoughts on Quercetin, both for China Syndrome and in general?

I’m seeing Quercetin has zinc ionophore effects, like hydrochloroquine:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/264127862_Zinc_Ionophore_Activity_of_Quercetin_and_Epigallocatechin-gallate_From_Hepa_1-6_Cells_to_a_Liposome_Model

And a direct attack on the similar original SARS coronavirus:

https://www.consumerlab.com/m/answers/do-natural-remedies-or-supplements-prevent-coronavirus/natural-remedies-coronavirus/

I’m curious if anyone else is looking at this or whether it is a rat hole.

And those who contracted the disease are denied the meds because they are banned by the governor until you are admitted to the death house and its to late for you. Fredo and the govs wife stay at home and make a quick recovery, hydroxy for you and not for me?

“We destroyed a $22 trillion economy over a strain of the flu that primarily kills elderly residents in nursing homes.”

Agree, but feel uncomfortable saying it.

I wish there was a way of showing “how many years left to live” were lost. I believe most of the people who died, and even the ones merely hospitalized, were in their last months of life.

This was the left going nuclear because that was the only thing that had a chance of beating Trump this fall. They killed the economy rather than face the will of the people.
