A Republican candidate for governor has sued Gov. Jay Inslee in federal court, claiming that Inslee's statewide stay-home ban amid the pandemic is a clear violation of First Amendment rights guaranteeing freedom of speech and religion.

The candidate, Joshua Freed, filed the suit Tuesday in U.S. District Court. It seeks a restraining order or injunction that would prohibit the enforcement of Inslee's order against religious gatherings.

The suit also seeks a judgment from the court declaring that Inslee's order violates the U.S. Constitution's free speech, right to assemble and due process clauses.

According to the lawsuit, Inslee's stay-home order carves out broad exemptions for 162 types of commercial and recreational activities, including cannabis retailers, but expressly prohibits religious gatherings of two or more people.

The lawsuit says the ban on religious gatherings applies "whether it is indoors or outdoors, whether it is on private property or whether the participants employ social distancing, hygiene or other efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19."

Freed's lawsuit also says that Inslee's shutdown order has prevented him from holding weekly small Bible studies at his home, which he has conducted for the past 2 1/2 years, "to support dozens of young people who have sought emotional, mental and spiritual support."

“The number of attendees is small, and Mr. Freed’s home allows the services to be held outdoors when weather permits,” according to the filing.

We'll see how far this goes. I saw Mr. Freed at the protest on Sunday at the Capitol in Olympia. Seemed like an okay guy.

WA state republicans here have been pathetic ...

they and the sheriffs should be joining on this lawsuit so it can achieve class-action status.

Didn’t Inslee (that idiot) claim that Trump would make Washington citizens to be “insubordinate”? Is this like a Democrat King proclaiming his subjects can’t cross him?

Don’t know anything about him, but you’re right, there’ve got to be more suits and we’ve got to stop this from going any further.

CT wants to have drones flying around to check people’s temperatures, little St Augustine, FL has set up a constant remote temp monitoring app (still voluntary), everybody is watching your cell phone movements, NYC wants people to snitch on their neighbors...and we’re all tolerating it. I feel like this is not my America anymore.

It would be a major miracle if a christian man was elected to the Governors office in Washington.

It would be almost as big as Christ’s resurrection....well okay, that a bit dramatic...but...
