WASHINGTON, April 21 (Reuters) - Harvard University said it plans to keep an $8.6 million grant it received as part of a stimulus package to blunt the economic impact of the coronavirus lockdown, contradicting U.S. President Donald Trump who pledged the university would return it.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Trump pointed to the institution's ample endowment - worth nearly $41 billion - as the reason why it should hand over the money.
"Harvard is going to pay back the money and they shouldn't be taking it," Trump said, adding that Harvard has one of the largest endowments "in the country, maybe in the world."
In a statement issued moments after the briefing ended, however, Harvard said it planned "to direct 100% of the funds to financial assistance to students, and will not be using any of the funds to cover institutional costs."
Trump said late on Tuesday that Harvard's endowment system should be looked at.
"Harvard should give back the money now. Their whole "endowment" system should be looked at", the U.S. president said in a tweet, which did not give further details

I don’t blame Harvard for taking it, I blame the idiots for writing a bill that allows them to take it.
Never get into a pissing contest with the most powerful man in the world.
Wealth tax on university endowments. Starve the beaats.
Uh-oh! Harvard’s smarter than Trump! They will certainly win this battle, being super smart and all. Surely, no problems for them will arrive from the ominous sounding “Their whole “endowment” system should be looked at” statement. They’re smarter than Trump and I’m sure their endowment system is squeaky clean and tax compliant.
And Harvard is dirty as hell...
Big Education is in the pocket of the Rats.
That’s OUR tax money, Harvard...use your $40 billion Endowment. ..or...give back Tuition.
A confiscary wealth tax on endowments...
Come and take it, Congress.
Every last damn dime.
...confiscatory...
Come on, POTUS. Chum the waters...
WHO gave them this money?? What BANK??
Immediately suspend all research grants. Problem solved.
“I dont blame Harvard for taking it, I blame the idiots for writing a bill that allows them to take it.”
It is not always either/or. I blame both.
Wealth tax on university endowments.

Good idea but it will never happen becuase the Rats will protect their allies in academia and the Repukes....well, you know what they’ll do.
Dems inserted it to protect liberalism in colleges, GOP should have removed it.
How about a university wealth tax, where the endowments from richer institutions get redistributed to the less fortunate ones? Academic Justice, or something. I’m sure Harvard would be all in, being woke and all.
Trump said if they dont deserve it and received it and dont return it, we have ways to change their mind(paraphrasing)
OK, PDJT lets see what those ways are !
Harvard sure has taken a dive when it comes to decency, integrity and honor. What a crap institution it has become.
That’s the right answer. They took government money so they wouldn’t have to use their own to pay their staff. Okay, well we’re not paying their staff twice. No grant money for at least a year.
