OPINION: Gov. Kemp: Don’t risk virus’ resurgence here
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 4/20/20 | AJC Editorial Board

We all look forward to the day we can put this pandemic behind us, but given Georgia’s performance so far, Gov. Brian Kemp is moving too soon and confusing citizens. He is risking a resurgence of the coronavirus in our state.

Yes, the statistical models have started to bend in our favor. While just models, these different analyses of COVID-19 cases and deaths, suggest that the state may be past its peak and a dire situation is getting better.

***

The state ranks among the nation’s worst for its number of COVID-19 cases and the deaths.

The state ranks in the bottom 10 in testing per capita. Experts say the state still lacks the testing capacity needed to detect the true scope of the disease, as well as the resources required to trace the contacts of infected persons, in order to isolate future outbreaks.

***

There are some crucial things that he should tend to:

Testing. Tests of several types will be needed in great volume. Georgians will need to know if they’ve had the virus and now have immunity. They need to know if they risk exposure or exposing others.

Goals, not dates. The coronavirus isn’t following the calendar. The state’s plan should be built around infection rates, testing data and ongoing plans to monitor new cases. Arbitrary dates aren’t helpful and could create false hope or a temptation to abandon practices that are working.

The Atlanta media are not on the side of reopening the state, and they will do all they can to scare businesses out of reopening--and customers from patronizing those that do.

We're about to put the Free Market to the test. I don't see the good people of Georgia running out to restaurants right away.

But we'll find out.

“Goals, not dates.”

That’s what Gov Kemp did. Your goal was to destroy the economy and promote tyranny, while the Governor gave the May 1 DATE so you can go F yourselves.

Idiots. Georgia's deaths peaked two weeks ago or more. The cases may be going up, but who the F cares?

Hmm. I’ll be honest. As much as I don’t like how restrictive my state is with regard to orders coming from above, I at least trust my fellow citizens to be responsible without the govt’s “help.”

We health conscious Californians would wear masks, sanitize our hands and businesses, and practice distancing measures even without anyone else enforcing it.

But do people elsewhere take the virus threat seriously enough? That’s the question.

With freedom comes responsibility.

Gannet press has suddenly changed all their reporting to the dread of reopening and how disastrous this is going to be.

They’ve stopped reporting the numbers altogether because they’re leveling off and have doubled down on reporting the misery and devastation with nothing about how to safely reopen or moveon.

It’s insidious.

Atlanta is not Georgia and New York City is not America and what is best for New York City is not best for America and likewise what is best for Atlanta is not best for Georgia. The democrats are trying to treat all of America like the big cities just to ruin the economy to make trump look bad before the election.

The Left’s new goal is to demand the lockdown continue until there are “no more corona deaths”.

Trouble is, by classifying nearly everything as corona-related, you can never reach that point, so the lockdown continues forever ... “we can’t risk endangering the public’s safety” etc. etc.

If the AJC is against it that settles it for me. FULL SPEED AHEAD!!!

They have already written the “opened too soon” articles and now have to find one out of Georgia’s 150 counties to write about when there is a 2% spike somewhere.

I would have no problem going to a restaurant in my area(middle Georgia).

Our county of 160,000 people has had only 165 confirmed cases, 10 deaths.

Thanks. One of my best friends lives in Atlanta and was sending me photos of a local park that may have been a bit too close-proximity of a crowd for comfort.

Agreed the homelessness issue here in LA is a travesty and the health consciousness doesn’t negate political stupidity. *shrug*

A resurgence implies you had a surge to resurge from, and you didn’t.

Some folks may only be five feet apart. Most of those pictures have interesting angles and cropping to make it look bad
