Hundreds of travelers, motivated in part by $100 airfares, are still crossing the Pacific to ride out the pandemic in Hawaii. Last week alone, more than 800 non-residents flew there. Meanwhile, locals and some legislators are growing increasingly frustrated. They assume the statewide mandatory self-quarantine order two weeks for out-of-state visitors and inter-island travelers isnt being followed. They also anticipate that disregard by travelers will result in more Covid-positive cases in Hawaii, stressing an already ill-equipped healthcare system.

Well, there are worse places to shelter. Better have some $$$$$, though.

They love Hormel Spam there. They might have to go thru withdrawal if the Hormel shutdown goes on for awhile.

But it is a long flight and the only way I would go is to fly First Class.

It isn’t that great, trust me. There are a lot of places closer to home where you’d have a better time and spend far less money.

Stupid local in Poipu wears a T-shirt that boasts: My ancestors killed Captain Cook. Yeah, now their women dance for the entertainment of Cook's progeny.

I loaded up on SPAM and bacon this weekend. I also added 50 pounds of chicken to the freezer.

I bought a case of Spam today once I read this story. $35 is cheap insurance in case store shelves run bare.

I’m sure you’re right.
Like I said, I really have no desire to go.
The only place I might be interested in is Pearl Harbor.
But, that is a long way to go and a lot of money for one stop.
Like you said there are places closer and less expensive on the continent.

They whine about the visitors bringing disease and they whine about the tourist dependent economy cratering. Cant have it both ways. Just invest in some test kits and test everyone coming off the planes from the mainland. Just as fast as X-raying all luggage for food.
There is enough beach space in Hawaii that nobody needs to crowd anyone except maybe Wakiki which can close permanently for all I care.

$100 air fares??? Boy,I’m tempted.

“Cant have it both ways.”
Up in Alaska they can’t wait for the weather to break in the Spring so the tourists come up and start spending money.
Up in Alaska they can’t wait for the cold and rain and snow to come in the Fall so the tourists will go the f*^% home.
