Colorado’s craft beer industry is sobered as brewers predict mass closures if social distancing continues
The Colorado Sun ^ | 17 April 20 | John Frank

The existential crisis in the Colorado beer world is palpable right now as an industry built on social gathering comes to realize that social distance is the new normal.

As much as 15% of craft breweries expect to close by the end of the month if social distancing remains in place, according to a national survey from the Boulder-based Brewers Association, and more than 60% don’t expect to survive beyond June.

If applied to Colorado — which now counts about 420 breweries — the projections suggest 250 would close by summer. That would represent a huge dent for an industry woven into the state’s identity and one that contributes more than $3 billion a year to the state’s economy.

The alarming statistics sound unbelievable until you talk to brewers. The most optimistic response in conversations this week came from Andy Astor, the furloughed brand manager at Elevation Beer Co. in Poncha Springs. “We’re still here,” he said.

Usually not a good idea to generalize, but the following occurs to me.

Alcohol is a pretty social drug. Loud bars, parties, sporting events, etc. As the article indicates, with social distancing, alcohol consumption becomes a bit awkward.

On the other hand, depending on variety, marijuana can be a lot less social. Some strains provide “couch lock” where you just get zonked and stare at things or listen to music. Social distancing is greatly enhanced.

Two things might break the rats keeping their states locked down. Home Schooling and no state revenue.

I agree. Most of these craft beer guys are stupid democrats.

I live here and have never voted for a democrat in my life. The problem is, the public education system is cranking out idiots by design.

The Denver mayor is just as bad. He totally botched the airport renovation, now he says,”People over the economy”. Wants To lockdown forever. He wants to burn it all down.

May as well throw in the towel then because even if they lift social distancing, people will social distance.

Here in Commiefornia, one of our biggest micro-breweries (is that an oxymoron?), Sierra Nevada Brewing Company (which just announced their annual Beer Camp has been cancelled) is run by big-time Libs who buy into and support the whole Lib Agenda.

Nothing terrifies Democrats more than children getting smart with home schooling.

The kids might learn how to recognize leftist propaganda—that will make them public enemies!

Stop paying school teachers when they aren’t teaching....stop delivering food shipments into shut-down areas....this thing ends in a couple of days.

Most, but not all. The craft beer industry is rife with feel-good brewers and workers that are pretty talented but are really going nowhere in life. Wasting their late 20s and 30s jumping from job to job and experience to experience when they really need a career. Millennials, basically.

F**k “new normal”. Saying that in public should be 50 lashes and a week in the stocks. This isn’t the flu, bro. But it’s not Captain Trips, either. God, what would people today have done when Polio was spreading around? We had better get back to “normal”. Some mitigation was warranted like social distancing, and PSAs to exercise strict “flu season manners”. IMO that would have covered 95% of the problem with 5% of the pain and inconvenience. People have no concept of “diminishing returns” at all. It has become the pandemic version of post-911 “security theater” with (mostly Democrap) political whores trying to out-nazi each other to get in front of the TV cameras and look like they’re “doing something”. And none of these nazi Pandemic Nuremburg Laws make any real incremental difference over what was already being done, other than totally crashing the economy.

We needed to make sure the health care system was protected, but you also cannot have a first world health care system without a first world economy to support it.
