The obverse (heads) design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932. It has been restored to bring out subtle details and the beauty of the original.
The reverse (tails) design depicts a Samoan fruit bat mother hanging in a tree with her pup. The image evokes the remarkable care and energy that this species puts into their offspring. The design is intended to promote awareness to the species threatened status due to habitat loss and commercial hunting. The National Park of American Samoa is the only park in the United States that is home to the Samoan fruit bat.

To be fair, fruit bats are the cutest of all bats. They are the teddy bears of the bat world. Zookeepers, who care for them generally are quite fond of them, as they can be very friendly.
The wife of a friend of my brother had one as a pet. My brother said it was very cute, playful, and affectionate with the wife, like a puppy.
That old bat that is speaker of the house is anything but cute.
Extra special collectible.
I posted about that weeks ago. Seemed to be somewhat ironic.
Used to do a bit of work in American Samoa. The locals would invite me out for an evening beach BBQ. Theyd line up at dusk under the cliff and cave trees with shotguns. When the fruit bats flew off roost they would bang away. Gather the fallen clean, skin and put them on the grill.
I never went, but they said it tasted like .. ... .. uh uh ... ... chicken.
