SC Gov. McMaster to lift coronavirus restrictions on some retail stores
The State ^ | APRIL 19, 2020 | MAAYAN SCHECHTER

South Carolinians will be able to once again shop in-person at some of the state’s retail stores.

Gov. Henry McMaster is expected on Monday to lift restrictions he placed weeks ago on some retail stores in the state, including clothing, furniture and jewelry stores, a source familiar with the governor’s plans told The State on Sunday.

The governor had initially closed the stores to further stop the outbreak of COVID-19, a respiratory disease that can be fatal.

The number of positive COVID-19 cases in the state has surpassed 4,200 as of Saturday, resulting in more than 100 deaths. However, the state’s public health officials have reported that the majority of people get better, or about 67% of cases.

Under the governor’s upcoming directive, department stores and flea markets can reopen and along with crafts, music, shoe and book stores.

Any store that reopens must abide by previous directives, limiting occupancy to five customers per 1,000 square feet.

The directive will not, however, allow inside dining at restaurants or lift the governor’s stay-at-home executive order that asks South Carolinians to work remotely if possible.

Trey Walker, the governor’s chief of staff, told the Charleston Post and Courier — which first reported the news — that McMaster is also considering also reopening salons, barbershops and gyms as long as the number of customers are limited and protective masks and other personal protective gear is used.

Emma Dumain contributed to this report.

To me it’s a noticeable step forward.

Maybe I can hang out at the off site makeshift garage without a gendarme telling me to stay home.

I don’t want to be one of those “earlier this week” segments on Live PD. I live in Richland county.

Yet another idiotic situation. If grocery stores are open, other retailers should be open. Everyone in society goes to the grocery store because they have to eat. If they are going to be infected or the exposed to infection, they have already been exposed to infection at the grocery store.

I’m telling ya......I’ve mastered the process of ordering online and picking it up at the drive-thru. Or have my wife do it on the way home.

Well of course so have l. I am thinking of the restaurants more than myself. All of them in my area has thrown in the towel and given up except one Some will never re-open this l know. It’s sad some have been around for years and now they are gone.

Yeah, it's sad that some of these places - and I don't mean just restaurants - were local institutions, and they had to close up shop after so many years because the patronage dropped off during this affair to the point where they couldn't even pay out of pocket to keep the rent paid. We have one restaurant here that has really good Greek/Italian food, not only in quality, but in quantity for the price, and so far they've been able to keep limited seating open somehow (outdoors on the covered patio, I believe) and persevered on a lot of curbside orders.

Totally agree. Meanwhile here in The People's Republik of Connecticut, MAYBE our stores, restaurants, hair salons, etc. will be open by Christmas. 😡

My chiropractor has been open through this but I guess it depends on the office.

The Nervous Nellies were bi-partisan, one who was his GOP primary opponent.

I will message the guy and see what he says. With all the insanity lately, that’s something that I haven’t kept too close a tab on.

Me and my wife are way overdue for adjustment.

The acupuncture crowd sent a blurb out saying expect to reopen in May. That was a week ago. I hope that has moved up.

Acupuncture does wonders for the headaches I get. Better than most of the pills on the shelves. I tried it out of desperation. Most things I am very skeptical about, especially alternative medicine.

The clinic is in a very nice building downtown and stayed booked.

No surprise there.

I hadn’t done any real analysis of who was who.
