Coronavirus: Free laptops for disadvantaged pupils during lockdown

Free laptops and tablets will be offered to children from disadvantaged backgrounds across England to help them study at home during lockdown.

With schools closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the equipment will make learning from home more achievable for those kids who are most in need.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said 4G routers will also be given to families who don't already have mobile or broadband internet.

Young people will be eligible for the devices if they don't already have one and either have a social worker or are care leavers, or are disadvantaged children in year 10, ahead of GCSEs next year.

Once schools reopen, schools and colleges will be able to keep the equipment, according to the Department for Education.

In another move to make remote learning more accessible, a new national online academy providing 180 online lessons per week is also being launched on Monday.

Those that don’t sell it for drug money, will use it for on line games.

Perhaps students and families in the UK are more respectful of free stuff than here. The US experience has shown many times the free equipment gets beat up and is rarely returned. Nobody respects “free” things because it has zero value to them.

How well are all those free housing units treated?

Around here, the free laptops were ChromeBooks. Probably cost about $300 each or less to the school, which bought them in bulk.

This may seem expensive to some, but I bet the school district could save more than that on books, supplies, janitorial services, HVAC costs, power, water, etc. over the course of an entire year.

They’re doing something like this in Chicago — free laptops — but the kids aren’t using them for school. Few have even signed in.

More than 10,000 Chrome Books were distributed in my Florida school district.

Suppose you measured how much of the time on these devices is used for "study at home". If I guessed 5%, I'm afraid that might be too high.

Chicago is giving out 100,000. They’ll either be trashed, stolen or sold within a week.

They are not giving free laptops away here in my part of the country. But I'm hearing some kids are having problems with the remote teaching because their parents can't afford internet connection or they are having problems paying the electric bill.

Sometimes the kids are innocent.

As as happened every time the taxpayer has been hit up this way.

Maybe so, but I bet they have cell phones! Which in most cases could be used as hotspots for web connections. I despise handouts to “the poor”! Such a scam, traditionally!
