Gov. Phil Murphy painted a dire outlook for New Jersey public-worker jobs on Saturday afternoon, pleading for more financial aid to lift a state economy that has been cratered by the coronavirus.
We will have layoffs that will be historic, Murphy warned, as he called for Congress to send more direct aid to states, and as he urged state lawmakers to help him borrow billions of dollars.
He added that the layoffs would be felt through New Jersey, at the state, county and local levels.
Thats whats at stake. I dont know how many, but it is big, big numbers, Murphy said during his daily coronavirus press briefing in Trenton.

There will be many political science term papers to be written about the upcoming conflict between the teachers’ unions (and their wholly-owned politicians) and the would-be consumers of the previously-fairly-reliable “free” government daycare.
Those of us who don’t use that “service” have been saying for decades that we should get some of our money back, but now literally everyone is in the same boat: paying for *nothing*.
Pelosi’s home, safe and eating ice cream, call back later
Layoffs will be coming to Red states as well as Blue states. Just a part of the 20 million-plus unemployed.

Of course its all about union power and revolving political contributions of who gets to milk it longer.
This may be the only way the NJ Democrats discover their panic driven decisions have consequences.
Good opportunity for RATS to get people back on the plantation and counter the positive effects of Trump rallies.
Yup! Zero Based Budgeting is the first thing that should be changed, for ALL States, Counties, and Localities.
In other words, “give me money or i’ll sink this state even further”
Actually it wasn't so long ago that the idea that the Federal Government could make direct payments to citizens (or even worse, wetbacks) except to pay for goods or services was an anathema. I recall while researching something else in old newspapers, I came upon an obituary of some senator who was praised for his opposition to direct payments to sufferers of black lung disease, which must have been the first time such direct payments were made.

As a long time NJ resident, I can assure the rest of you that if there were an immediate PERMANENT layoff of 50% of the NJ State employees, no one I know would notice.

Does this guy know how money works?
The rest of the country should not have to pay for New Jersey’s poor public hiring decisions. They’ll have to go get real jobs now.
Let the state raise taxes on their citizens. If they stay closed maybe they want to have their citizens go bankrupt before they die.
IF businesses have to lay off people, then gubment can lay off people.
Strange, one would think COVIDaid would go to hospitals and emergency services not government employees...
When it comes time to rehire the layed off employees, only hire the guy USING the shovel, not the other 5 standing there watching.
Sounds great to me. If only more public sector leeches could be laid off - permanently.
if they are not working, they should not get paid. Keep the insurance benefits going and have them collect unemployment.
