Can UV Light Be Used to Kill Airborne Flu Virus? - WebMD

MONDAY, Feb. 12, 2018 (HealthDay News) -- As a particularly nasty flu season rages across the United States, scientists have found a powerful new disinfectant that makes "light" work of the virus.

Researchers say a certain spectrum of ultraviolet light -- called far-UVC -- easily kills airborne flu viruses while posing no risk to people.

It could offer a new, inexpensive way to eliminate airborne flu viruses in indoor public spaces such as hospitals, doctors' offices, schools, airports and aircraft, said the team from Columbia University Medical Center in New York City.

UV light are very effective. They’ve been used for decades in labs. We had the installed in our level 3 labs.

The bulbs are easy to get and it’s easy to build a light. I’ve used them on a timer for years to zap packages in the garage.

Expecting the first death of a moron dying in a tanning booth or a hoax and the left will sh*t themselves and blame Trump.

UV-C light is hazardous to vision. This article distinguishes between what it calls "multi-spectrum" UV-C light, which it confirms is hazardous to vision, and what it calls "far UV-C light", which isn't. Apparently the latter's light is limited to a portion of the UV-C spectrum.

The article also confirms that both kinds of UV-C light are effective in destroying viruses.

I bought a UV-C light "pouch" for sterilizing the N95 masks of my wife and I. It has a UV-C light tube in a bag which is large enough to hold the light tube and an N95 mask. The bag has a zipper and the idea is to only turn the light tube on when the mask is zipped inside. I can't confirm that it works but the Amazon description and reviews say it will kill any live CV19 viruses on the mask inside.

UVC is very harmful compared to UVA and UVB. UVA and UVB are what sunscreen protects you from. The atmosphere prevents harmful amounts of UVC from getting to the ground level fortunately.

UVC can cause tissue damage very fast compared to other UV. UVC is used inside HVAC equipment to prevent microbial growth on the AC coils and sometimes in the condensate pans, and it sanitizes the air some as it passes by the light. UVC can cause eye damage very, very quickly too. But inside an air handler with proper safety interlock devices it posses no danger to humans.

Those handheld UV lights are worthless.

Researchers Prove UV Light Can Kill Flu Viruses Without Harming Humans Far-ultraviolet C (far-UVC) light can kill flu viruses and could reduce the incidence of flu infections.

Just don’t use infrared. Or the lava lamp.

The future will be a gas mask with a UV light filtration system mandatory for everybody stepping into public.

New York City ought to put a UV air cleaner on every subway car.

I’ve got a monster UV-B source that came out of a lab. I wonder if that would work.

I think it requires UV-C.

I bought a monster O3 generator in early January at a discount price. 11 grams per hour. These really clear out a room. Set it for 2 hours, shut the door and leave.

If anyone here has a good source for 185NM UV bulbs and fixtures let me know. The fixtures are the hard part.

Not sure “kill” is the right word to use when talking about a virus that isn’t a living organism to start with. ‘Destroy’ is probably more correct.

Dec. 2019: Go out and play in the mud, snow, and dirt kids.

April 2020: Stay in the house and breathe the UV cleaned air kids.

not according to https://www.1000bulbs.com/

I wanted to set up a large array of UV lights to kill the virus and all bugs in our church and the people at https://www.1000bulbs.com/ told me that UV light does NOT kill the virus.

Well.. they are wrong in the sense that they have made a blanket statement that is just plain false on its face.

But, the problem is for them that UV (A,B, or C) light will hurt people if it is strong enough to kill viruses rapidly. This is the same problem with people saying Sunlight doesn’t kill viruses and this is wrong too. But, its time on target.

Lots of data out there and there are wants for $60 that kill bacteria and viruses in seconds but they are held close to the target (Less than an inch) which increase the effect 100 fold.

This article is about a very narrow spectrum UV light that can be bright enough to kill viruses in the air or on surfaces and not damage skin or eyes of the people in the space.

UV can be used in a backpack setup where ambient air is pumped through the pack slowly and then delivered to the user via face-mask. The systems also can concentrate oxygen from ambient air if needed. An O2 sensor controls the O2 generator...the richer the O2 the less air volume you need to take in.

Basically a small air pump sucks in air and runs it through a filter and then the filtered air is passed through a set of small tubes illuminated very strongly by UV. Then O2 is added if needed....

Limited by battery life but great for the proper circumstance.

What is different is that they are discussing a specific wavelength that is not as dangerous to humans but still impacts the RNA in the Virus shells.
