Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz has asked an obvious question, one that has not come up at the daily White House coronavirus press briefing -- why is the Wuhan Virology Lab a grantee of the National Institutes if Health, whose National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) -- headed by one Dr. Anthony Fauci -- and a recipient of $3.7 million to study coronavirus in bats? Gaetz has gone beyond mere curiosity, writing a letter to HHS Secretary Azar demanding the grant be terminated:
Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., called on Health & Human Services Secretary Alex Azar Tuesday to cease funding a research grant to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, telling "Tucker Carlson Tonight" the action could be accomplished "with the stroke of a pen."
"I'm against funding Chinese research in our country, but I'm sure against funding it in China," Gaetz said. "The NIH [National Institutes of Health] gives a $3.7 million grant to the Wuhan Institute of Virology [and] they then advertise that they need coronavirus researchers and following that, coronavirus erupts in Wuhan."…
"What's really troubling to me is either conspicuously or miraculously the Wuhan Institute of Virology is able to sequence the virus on January 2 but China doesn't admit to the virus existing until January 9 and then the Wuhan Institute of Virology doesn't release this important scientific information to the world until January 12," Gaetz said.
"So at best, Americans are funding people who are lying to us and at worst, we're funding people who we knew had problems handling pathogens, who then birthed a monster virus onto the world," he added.

It would be interesting to see the wording of the grant and a list of what was expected from it.

This story continues to unfold, but there were further clues yesterday:
- Trump strongly inferred the funding was done under the Obama admin, but ceased under Trump
- Fauci tried to fortify his distance from the topic by basically insisting the lab did not modify the genome but stopped short of denying it may have leaked
- The are NIH reports from 2015 indicating coronavirus manipulation was likely being done at the Wuhan lab at the request of US sponsors such as U of NC
- There are rumors the U of NC work was being done in China due to a possible regulation or law prohibiting it in the US
- I like Gaetz a lot but he sometimes seems to put Trump in a bad light especially if this funding was all approved under Obama and originated in Congress

However, from my cave exploring days I know that there were studies of American bats as rabies carriers. We were warned not to handle bats in caves and give them wide berth. As I recall, some caves were gated.
Saying that, When American’s with an interest in bats as disease vectors learned of Chinese research concerning cave bats as carriers of respiratory disease, they were almost compelled to learn about the research and in fact join it. It was a matter of American public health. That may in fact have turned out to be true
Further, in America bats live in peoples attics and....... belfries

Well, since we have zero access to the lab now, that’s not working out very well.
Quite obviously, we were not abreast of what was going on there for the 3.7 million. Or were we?
Seems all the wrong people are those who at this moment want to continue shattering what is left o America.

Because big diseases are coming out of China and it’s good to have a lab near ground zero. In theory, to catch and contain them quick.

She’s almost certainly drawing a large salary and extravagant benefits but is equally almost certainly not essential to ACTUAL vaccine development and may actually be hindering it with overly stringent “regulations”.
