Britain Paid $20 Million For Faulty China-Made COVID-19 Antibody Tests; Half a million of the China-made tests are now in storage

The British government paid $20 million for COVID-19 antibody tests from two Chinese companies, only to later find they didn’t work properly, according to multiple reports.

Half a million of the China-made tests are now in storage, according to a New York Times report.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the kits “[a]s simple as a pregnancy test” in a March statement announcing negations to buy the product, adding “it has the potential to be a total game changer.”

“Because once you know that you have had it, you know that you are likely to be less vulnerable, you’re less likely to pass it on, and you can go back to work,” Johnson said, referring to the way widespread antibody testing could help the country cope with the outbreak of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, the novel coronavirus that emerged from mainland China last year and causes the disease COVID-19.

But an Oxford University trial later found that the tests were faulty. The China-made tests did not pass sensitivity and specificity tests, according to British news outlet The Telegraph.

“They might perhaps have slightly jumped the gun,” said Prof. Peter Openshaw of Imperial College London, a member of the government’s New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group, according to The New York Times. “There is a huge pressure on politicians to come out and say things that are positive.”

A government spokesperson said authorities would try to recoup their money from what The Telegraph reported was around 3.5 million China-made fingerprick tests.

The COVID-19 swab test that the British government currently has at its disposal can only tell if someone has the virus but not whether they once had it and were now recovered.

British authorities hoped to roll out millions of the antibody tests, also known as serological tests, in coming weeks, as part of a strategy to exit the countrywide lockdown more quickly.

Well, back to the drawing board....

What? Their contract didn't have an acceptance clause that would verify that the tests would actually work before payment? Or that they will pay upon shipment by the Chinese?

Is their contracts department really THAT stupid?

Good luck clawing your money back, you fools.

I am going to try and get that anti-body test as soon as it’s available. From what I have read about minor symptoms, my wife and I may actually have had the virus and recovered already.

I am feeling a little more confident about going out shopping. But just to be safe I always take a placebo before going out.

Surely, you must be kidding. How do you know it was not the flu? Better get tested to be sure.

“Is their contracts department really THAT stupid?”

This is the same nation that sold the Soviet Union an actual working jet engine design, the Rolls Royce Nene, when the Soviet Union didn’t have one that would work for any useful period of time. They sold 25 of them to the Soviets on the “ironclad” assurance that it would be a paid purchase, used only in airliners and civilian aircraft, never military applications.

Once the engines were delivered, the Soviets promptly stiffed the British on the payment and promptly reverse engineered it as the Klimov VK-1. The first thing they put the Nenes and their VK-1 clones into were the MiG-15.

This wasn’t even the first time they’d done something that incredibly stupid in the previous 20 years. They’d sold engines to Nazi Germany that were used to develop many of the famous Nazi warplanes in WW2. Worse, they’re still doing idiot things like that - their Type 45 destroyers can’t operate much south of the Med because the contract for them didn’t specify that their powerplants had to work in warm to hot environments!

So, yes, they really are that stupid.

Gen 1 antibody tests are fraught with issues. Not to mention the high error rate associated wuth bedside or in office testing. The immune sytem is insanely complex and this is what we rely on to develop antibody tests.
A false positive test, as we had with gen 1 hiv, will do more harm than good.
Only an accredited lab holds to the rigorous standards.
