Sweden has seen a renewed spike in coronavirus cases today after another 613 people tested positive.
The 613 new cases mark the biggest jump for seven days and the third-largest since the crisis began, taking Sweden's total from 11,927 to 12,540.
Deaths were up by 130, the second-highest daily death toll after yesterday's 170, bringing the total from 1,203 to 1,333.
Sweden is continuing to hold out against a national lockdown despite growing criticism and calls for 'rapid and radical measures' to contain the outbreak.
Yesterday's higher figures were partly attributable to an Easter weekend backlog, but today's numbers appear to represent a genuine jump in new infections.
The 613 new cases reported today are the highest 24-hour jump since 722 new infections were added to the tally a week ago.
The 5.1 per cent increase is also the highest since last week, at a time when many countries are seeing their infection rates slow down.
Sweden's public health agency says 565 cases were reported on the calendar day of Wednesday, up from 440 on Tuesday and 420 on Monday.
The agency says more than 5,000 of Sweden's 12,540 cases area in the Stockholm region, with 214 new cases confirmed there yesterday.
Bars and restaurants are still open in Sweden along with primary schools, and public gatherings of 50 people are still permissible.
Shops are also open, and the government has emphasised taking 'personal responsibility' for social distancing rather than enforcing it.
'People in Sweden have a high level of trust in government agencies. This means that a large proportion of people follow government agencies' advice,' officials say.
'In the current situation, people in Sweden are on the whole acting responsibly to reduce the spread of infection by, for example, restricting their social contacts.

You can’t stop people from catching this bug or from dying.
All you can do is manage the steepness of the curve so as to not outstrip your healthcare system capacity.
In Sweden, they are taking the brunt of it now, so they don’t have to shutdown for the 2nd wave, then shutdown for the 3rd wave, etc.
They will have dealt with it, and gained herd immunity.
The reality of Sweden Socialist Dream.
Don’t speak logic. Even if one person dies it’s a disaster. And it’s worth closing down the entire economy and destroying the country
To this point, I would still take their approach over ours.
A huge spike in the near future might cause me to change my mind, but to this point, it seems like a prudent approach — in spite of all the attempts to sow fear about it.
The word I’m hearing is most of the victims are Muslims.
My dollar sys they are another China/Iran lying about their numbers...
Only time will tell whose policy was best...Sweden’s or Britain’s.Sweden’s economy will be damaged regardless...thanks to the fact that the rest of the industrialized world is shut down.
Freedom to live one’s life.
“A huge spike in the near future might cause me to change my mind, but to this point, it seems like a prudent approach in spite of all the attempts to sow fear about it.”
I’m not a medical professional. When there was talk of overwhelming the healthcare system, I shared that concern. I know of a local hospital that has a capacity of over 500 beds. Currently, there are less than 50 covid cases, and the census is around 300 total.
The lockdown may or may not have been a good idea, but we’re at the end of the first peak. Clearly, it’s time to open with mild restrictions. Monitor, and let this progress and be done with it.
“The word Im hearing is most of the victims are Muslims.”
That would be a beautiful thing.

You kinda can- HCQ+Zinc, (From dying anyways- but soem are taking it to help at least lessen the virus’ effect if they do catch it too)
Statistical anomaly around the weekend days.
Point accepted. To clarify you can’t stop there from being deaths due to this virus. A certain number is sadly going to happen.
12,540 cases and 1200+ deaths - that’s 10% death rate. Must only be testing people in the hospital
Seems they are doing a good job of containing the pandemic without having to institute draconian measures that were necessary in Lombardy, Italy and New York City.
“Freedom to live ones life”
Until you get infected and turn to the taxpayer to fund your medical treatment.
At that point, you are stealing another person’s freedom.
Sweden isn’t densely populated. Even their capital city is less than 1M people. The land mass is rather large too. So they’re “distancing” is more natural than most places.
We’ll see how they get along...
I suspect most of the cases will be in Malmo.
