Airlines and Disease in the New Normal
American Thinker.com ^ | April 16, 2020 | Jon N. Hall

The experts on TV have tackled a question occupying the minds of many anxious Americans worrying about their jobs: when will things get back to normal? If that means returning to the carefree days of just two months ago before the shutdown, the short answer is: hopefully never.

The coronavirus isn’t going anywhere; it’s just going to mutate, which it may be doing even now. We haven’t been able to eradicate other coronaviruses, like the one responsible for the common cold, nor have we been able to eradicate the seasonal flu, which constantly mutates, requiring new vaccines. It then follows that it’s folly to think about life without the virus, there’s only life with the virus and its future mutations and all the countless other microbes and their mutations.

So we shouldn’t hope for a return to “normalcy.” The old normalcy is what necessitated shutting down the world economy because of some pesky new bug. We don’t want to return to that normalcy, do we? Instead, there’ll be a “new normal” to live with. We had to adapt to a new normal after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and we’re still being inconvenienced at airports by its new protocols. Another fairly recent new normal was that imposed by the AIDS epidemic, when we all learned that unprotected sex with strangers isn’t very bright (who knew?). The question should be: what will our newest new normal be like?

“And we need to end this shutdown now and get back to work while we still have an economy to come back to.”

All the “new normals” are strictly man made incorrect overreactions.

Coronavirus has managed to do what AOC and her Green New Deal didn't: Severely curtail airline travel.

Why aren't Ocasio-Cortez and all her GND's supporters out there celebrating? (Maybe they are, just not openly.)

I fundamentally disagree with the need for a “new normal”.

The common cold is everywhere. Season flu comes around every year. Coronaviruses are not usually “novel”.

Disease is not a new thing and we don’t have to re-invent society because we just discovered the concept of disease.

The only thing that would change my thinking is the official US government admission that COVID-19 was a bioweapon attack on us from China, and that we expect China to continue to attack us every year with newer and more advanced bioweapons.

If we actually find ourselves in that situation, then we need to change our behavior. And the change I would rcommend at that point would be thermonuclear.

I’ve never been a fan of crowding.
.............
Flying is not fun, being packed in next to some really obnoxious elbow-rubbers.
............
I’ll take the train and stay away from mass gatherings until I can get vaccinated.
.............
Frankly, I’ve been treated worse by better bugs, if I get sick, I am sure I can ride it out, problem solved, and I still don’t want to fly.

If you notice the last month or so....vaccine experts are kinda hinting that this appears to modify itself to some degree, so a ‘pure-fix-all’ vaccine probably isn’t going to occur. You will get something that handles something in the 50-to-75 percent range, and then have to accept the fact that people will still get the virus, and if these risks are high...they go the ventilator route, with meds....hoping that they can survive the virus.

In five years, it’ll still be around....just with fewer infections and hospitalization will be standardized. The question will be....do we travel and do the same things as before, or do we isolate ourselves from the bulk of society?

Agree, I guess Trump will open 5-10 states next week. If Maine or Vermont are open I intend to drive there and spend hundreds of dollars to help their economies. I have not been exposed and do not have the virus and will even wear a mask, bit I intend to reward the state economies that open up.

“New Normal”

If you want a good drinking game that ensured intoxication, take a drink everytime you hear this worn out line.

The author makes typical false assumptions common in my baby boomer generation... first that this bug is in any way unprecedented. The only thing that is unprecedented is the insane overreaction by the media and governments around the world. Without any mitigation at all this most likely would not have produced anything more than a slight blip above the normal death and misery that humankind experiences every year. This is the type of contagion that has always been a problem where ever millions of people are stacked on top of one another and sharing mass transit that forces them to share small spaces together.

Exactly. I have begun correcting anyone that uses this phrase. Its a control phrase.

It is neither normal nor permanent.

” Another fairly recent new normal was that imposed by the AIDS epidemic”

AIDS was spread by abnormal behavior so the premise is wrong.
Many of the inconveniences imposed because of 911 are the result of PC idiocy.

So, FEAR is the new normal ?! I prefer sensibility ~ wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough/sneeze, stay home when you’re sick. No Nanny State treating people like toddlers

He is supposedly making an announcement today about it, and there are some countries that have opened their economy already according what was reported on Fox and Friends this morning. Germany is one of them

I can't really feel any sense of sorrow for anything associated with the airline industry. Their arrogance, poor service, and general lack of anything remotely resembling human decency over the years really speaks for itself. On its best day...MAYBE Southwest is an exception to this...but nearly ALL the others...especially Delta...a COVID-19 ridden pox on all of them.

Karma's a BITCH isn't it?
