ALMATY (Reuters) - Kazakhstan’s foreign ministry summoned the Chinese ambassador on Tuesday to protest over an article saying the country was keen to become part of China, the ministry said.

In a statement the Kazakh ministry said the article titled “Why Kazakhstan is eager to return to China” and published on privately-owned Chinese website sohu.com “runs counter to the spirit of permanent comprehensive strategic partnership” officially declared between the two countries.

I first read this in a Chinese-language article on the BBC website. Apparently there were similar-themed articles saying people in India’s Manipur, Kurds and (preposterously) Vietnam wanted to “return” to China. The articles get taken down after a while, but in the meantime are seen by many. So far Kazakhstan is the only country to formally protest.

We see China as basically, well "Chinese" -- and that's how it is de-facto. But they see themselves as a union of 4 peoples: Han, Manchu, Mongolian and Tibetan (among others) "all living in harmonious prosperity under heaven"

That's a profound disconnect and it has been there since at least 300 BC -- the Chinese saw "trade" as "tribute" to the Emperor and gifts given by him in return.

I don’t think China is particularly popular in Kazakhstan.
There were anti-Chinese pogroms, some as recent as this year.

When China decides for this to happen, it will, and nobody will stop it from happening.
Kazhakstan is the size of India, and has mineral resources and arable land.
It is smaller than Tibet which was absorbed into China and is now 25% of the Chinese area.
Lhasa, its capital, had 200-300 Chinese residents out of a population of 30,000 in 1950.
Today the Lhasa region has 900,000 residents, 2/3 of whom are Han Chinese.

If I were Russian, I would be nervous about Chinese ambitions in Siberia.

I'd be nervous if I were Australian too.

I don't think Russia will sit still for it.

That is probably correct. I have to make sure I always have enough popcorn for what is coming. And Scotch.

I’m guessing Kazakhstan learned it’s lesson while part of the Soviet Union.

China is where Germany was in the 1930’s and was hungry for more resources and lands. Now that they are making strides in arming up and feel good that their test run with bio warfare has pushed even Americans into a hole they feel that they can begin their roll into the world very soon

The poor Han Chinese being put upon.

What’s your opinion of the 1,000,000 Uighurs imprisoned in concentration camps by the totalitarian communist dictator Xi? Did you get one of their harvested organs ... yet?

I doubt the Kazaks are eager to turn their entire country into a concentration camp.
