Trump threatens to adjourn Congress to make recess appointments
Washington Times ^ | April 15,2020 | Dave Boyer

President Trump threatened on Wednesday to take the unprecedented step of adjourning Congress with his executive powers so he can make recess appointments of stalled nominees.

Speaking at the daily White House coronavirus task force briefing, Mr. Trump said his administration has been hamstrung by a lack of personnel because Senate Democrats have held up nominees.

He criticized the Senate and House for holding “phony” pro forma sessions, instead of adjourning, which prevents him from making recess appointments.

McConnell has no such power - any Senator can keep the Senate in “pro-forma” session. He has no power to unilaterally adjourn the Senate. McConnell is a powerful Senator, but he is still only one member of the body.

Nobody’s talking about that here on this thread. At least, I’m not. I’m talking about his China connection. If you want to look at the record you would find that one of the biggest movers of legislation dealing with favorable China trade was Mitch. Trade that has made his wife’s family billionaires. Why don’t you read what I wrote before you include me on your rant?

Correct - and right now - there is no disagreement. McConnell saying he wants the Senate to adjourn and Pelosi saying she doesn’t want the House to adjourn doesn’t create a disagreement among the houses - as they are heads of those houses, but they not the houses themselves.

“Pro-forma” is a gimmick, yes, but a gimmick that’s the legislative branch’s gimmick, a completely separate branch of government the President has no direct power over. We’ve already been there and done that with Obama.

Uh, yes you were - as that is the post you were responding to and you claimed that as an explanation as to why McConnell doesn’t exercise powers that don’t exist. I responded to you fully in context of the conversation.

Yeah, as an aside. But not in connection to that as far as I’m concerned.

Defend Mitch and China all you want, I hope most Freepers aren’t as ignorant and gullible.

He can convene them in special session for emergency reasons. If they fail to respond, and they disagree to adjourn, then he can effectively close them down.

So..
1, Is this an emergency reason enough to convene them?
2, If they fail to respond, and they disagree to and adjournment, he can adjourn them till he sees fit.

Because not everyone believes conspiracy theories and no one has offered any proof after all these many years. I must have read thousands and thousands of the same accusation here, but I have not seen any proof, just yahoos ranting.

”McConell’s a bought and paid for pawn of China. Why doesn’t more people realize that?“

Someone needs to say, publicly, to him and all the others similarly compromised, “China is at war with us. Declare now which side you are on.”

I never said McConnell was in anyone’s pocket. Elaine Chao certainly has sketchy ties to the Chicoms. Of course, her family benefits from the pre Trump China situation as much as any private shipping company in the world. Why should we care? Of course, Mitch gets half of Chao’s financial benefits. But heh, all these “conspiracies”...

What is McConnell’s reasoning for allowing this to get this far?

McConnell needs to block people who will be in a position to hold him and the Senate accountable.

That's why he blocked Congressman John Ratcliffe from becoming Director of National Intelligence. The DNI would know exactly what the Gang of 8 and the Senators have done, and would have the evidence.
