“Some legal temporary workers who became overstayers use the same Social Security number they got legally because Social Security does not cancel your Social Security number when your visa expires,” he said. “If you overstay, your Social Security number doesn’t turn into a pumpkin. You just keep using it.”
Krikorian said there are a variety of ways certain undocumented immigrants would be able to receive checks if they use Social Security numbers to file taxes.
“There’s no system in place that would enable Social Security or IRS to screen out people who shouldn’t be getting these checks,” he said. "You could have been in status for several years and your Social Security number doesn't expire. Social Security doesn't check whether you're still lawfully in the United States."
Krikorian also said he's certain that people who are now undocumented immigrants are still using Social Security previously issued to them. However, U.S. officials have "no idea" how many are doing that because they would have to match Social Security numbers with Department of Homeland Security data.
"And Social Security doesn't want to have anything to do with immigration," he said.
The IRS expects to start sending out the direct payments by mid-April.

There’s no reason to believe it would be better at screening than the Earned Income Tax credit.
I just put in my info into the IRS website at irs.gov (make sure it is IRS.gov and not some other site, I am sure scam sites are being made right now)

Last summer, I saw an argument erupt in a Texas DMV office, when the clerk refused to renew a license for someone (Middle-Eastern type) whose visa was not showing a "renewed" notation. So, apparently it is possible to flag government accounts with visa status; if Social Security isn't doing so, they need to explain why that is the case.

Somebody needs to have their ass kicked. “Matching” operations are NOT difficult to set up and run. If “they” are not doing this now to screen out undeserved payments to illegals, they certainly can set up ONGOING, PERIODIC matches to tell ICE which overstayers’ SSNs are being used illegally and at what employer(s) they are being used—as DEPORTATION ARREST LEADS.
We are already spending over $1 TRILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR on ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS- Every single year (Sorry for yelling, but certain phrases do need emphasizing)
When all the costs are added up, direct costs and indirect- illegals are costing this country over $1 Trillion Dollars per year- decades ago that estimate was between $400 billion and $600 billion- it’s very likely over 1 Trillion a year now-
This country’s tax money goes to paying all this off- Hard working legal citizens are footing this massive massive bill every single year, and congress can’t find measly $25 billion to complete the wall?
How is that possible? The checks will be distributed by the IRS.

I wonder how they will rectify the 1,235 “Juan Gonzalez’s”, all U.S. citizens with the same SSN, working in hundreds of different places all over the country.
It is also likely if they left when the6 should have they will still get a check or a direct deposit if the account is still open. What a mess.

They do, however, become illegal aliens at that point. Accepting the money dishonestly should be a federal crime and they should be marked as such for future application for citizenship. That is if our top notch federal agents can locate them as easily as they find citizens who break the law.
