Frazzled Michigan Gov. Whitmer tries to recover from attack on DeVos family
Washington Examiner ^ | April 14, 2020 | Paul Bedard

Embattled Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer picked an odd time to attack the state’s DeVos family, a founder of the giant Amway health, beauty, and home care firm that has been loading up the state with the personal protective equipment sought in the coronavirus crisis.

Whitmer, facing a recall movement after extending the state’s virus lockdown, lashed out at the “DeVos family” Monday, claiming that they are behind an upcoming protest from conservatives in the state.

Then today, after the family rejected the attack, she tried to play nice and issued a statement praising their firm, founded by Jay Van Andel and Rich DeVos. His son Dick, whose wife is Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, is Amway's former president and is now on the board.

On Monday, at a press conference to give an update on the virus, she slapped at the planned Wednesday protest in Lansing by the Michigan Conservatve Coalition, claiming it was funded by the DeVos-backed Michigan Freedom Fund.

“I also would just say, I think it is this group is funded in large part by the DeVos family and I think it’s really inappropriate for a sitting member of the United States president’s cabinet to be waging political tax on any governor, but obviously on me here at home. I think that they should disavow it and encourage people to stay home and be safe,” she said without giving any evidence linking Betsy DeVos to the group.

No apology? We all err, it's a simple test of integrity... https://t.co/OR1QXUmgs5

— Greg McNeilly (@gregmcneilly) April 14, 2020 But Freedom Fund executive director Tony Daunt rejected the claim.

He told local Fox 17 that his group put a “whopping $250” in a Facebook ad to promote the protest. “And for some reason the governor decided today to make this wild claim that the DeVos family was funding this rally and I think the Conservative Coalition and the thousands of people who have signed on to that group are offended by that. And as they should be,” he said.

The whiplash today: Whitmer issued a statement of praise for Amway’s help in stocking up the state’s medical facilities with masks, gowns and other equipment.

“Amway has really stepped up to help keep Kent County families and health care workers safe during this time. I’m eager to work with them and every other business that wants to contribute their time and machinery to helping us fight this virus. This is an all hands on deck moment for our state, and we're working with anyone and everyone to get the personal protective equipment our front line health care workers need to stay safe and save lives,” she said.

But it came with no apology to the DeVos family.

In reacting to her statement, Amway stayed positive, as always, and said, "As a family-owned company with deep Michigan roots, supporting our community has always been a priority at Amway. We are especially proud of how our employees have come together here – and around the world – to lend a hand during these challenging times."

Yes. The lockdown prevents the legally required personal signatures on a paper petition...

(cue Dana Carvey as the Church Lady, "How conveeeeeenient!")

but several online versions from change.org (with no legal standing but a lot of "oops, let's rethink" for those who give a crap) has garnered more than a quarter-million responses.

Her term, in the ordinary course of events, is up in 2022.

All she did was add to the good reasons supporting her recall.

I think she is too dumb to be anything other than a Democratic Socialist/Obama-Holder hand picked yes person (always says yes to following the line of march).

Maybe an alumni of gender studies, communications major. She doesn't have an engineering or physics vibe about her.

I got dragged kicking and screaming from Texas by economic and family pressures 21 years ago.

I’ve since assumed God wants me here as efforts to escape have been thwarted.

In my darkest days I suspect it’s to make me suffer for my sins... since He has promised me Salvation from the hot Hell, I have to endure the cold one.

It is nice in Summer, though. Already have plans to go camping in July with people from church.

At least it will give her some heartburn, chest pains and lots of jeering when in public.

When this is over there are gonna be a whole lot of formerly important people who can never walk into a restaurant again without getting an angry tongue lashing from somebody who was affected by this.

“How in the hell did she ever become Governor?”

“Gretchen Whitmer was born in 1971 in Lansing, Michigan, as the eldest of three children to Sharon H. “Sherry” Reisig and Richard Whitmer, who were both lawyers. Her father served as head of the state’s Department of Commerce under Governor William Milliken and was the president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan between 1988 and 2006. Whitmer’s mother worked as an assistant attorney general under Michigan Attorney General Frank Kelley. Her parents divorced when she was 10 years old; she and her siblings moved with their mother to Grand Rapids. Her father traveled from his home in Detroit to visit the family at least once a week.”

They hung the blame for the Flint water debacle around Rick Snyder's neck because one of his bean counters who was involved in the fiscal oversight of the city made the decision to change the water chemistry to save a few bucks.

There’s a recall ‘movement’ (people yakking about it and an unofficial email-harvesting petition site) but no formal, official recall petition, yet.

Official recall petition requires gov approval of wording, submission to state and a million or so (a % of state population) signatures on paper.

EVIL Governor Whitmer.

Face of EVIL. Sometimes a smile hides that ZERO compassion face but not always.

(old acquaintance Rick had it...he was in an out of jail/prison...current acquaintance Ron has it but he’s 73 and has overcome it by hard work. He does say things that you or I would never think, let alone say...the current lexicon would call him “unfiltered”)

Her "ban" on motorized boats proves her actions are purely political and have nothing to do with a public health re Wuhan-19.

Boating, jet-skiing banned under Michigan stay-at-home order; kayaking allowed

Jet Skies - Banned.
Motor boat - Banned.
Kayak - Approved.
Canoe - Approved.
Sailing - Approved.

Anyone see a pattern here?

No, this has nothing to do with the "green" agenda. Not at all.

How’s your liberty, though?

Crazy Kung Flu virus roolz aside...

Even with them, I went to Cabela’s a couple days ago and witnessed at least three handgun buys while I was poking around the AR-15 accessories aisle.

Lots of warm states that respect your rights. When you tire of the People’s Republic of California, come back to the USA.
