Gov. Pritzker fails to plan for Illinois recovery after pandemic — and residents panic
The Chicago Sun-Times ^ | April 13, 2020 | John Tillman

Gov. J.B. Pritzker has failed to address Illinois’ broken unemployment system, which has been unable to deliver benefits to people desperate for a lifeline. He has been incapable of cutting through the confusion facing small business owners, gig workers, independent contractors and sole proprietors about the status of their benefits. And on Sunday, after the nation’s top infectious disease expert said some sectors of the economy might be able to start reopening in May, Pritzker finally hinted that the state is thinking about — just thinking about — how to safely get key sectors back online, but that remains a closed conversation.

The uncertainty created by Pritzker’s lack of leadership on these issues is making residents panic.

Pritzker has said repeatedly that he cannot count on the White House, but he isn’t offering details on recovery solutions of his own. He should follow the example of other states, such as Utah, where state and local governments are putting together their own plans to navigate reopening the economy without prompting a second-wave outbreak. Or the example of New York, which reached out to Google to fix their unemployment system so new federal benefits could reach self-employed workers.

No surprise our governor is inept and clueless. We knew that before he was elected.

The purpose of the lockdowns was not to “stop a second wave.” That is 100% goalpost moving.

It was to prevent such a breakdown in healthcare systems—hospitals, mainly—that many more deaths would occur due to lack of acute critical care. You know, patients dying in hallways. They even tried to show that happening in a few places, remember? It didn’t happen, so the lockdown justification is GONE.

So end it!!!!!

Shifting the goalposts to “prevent a second wave” is insidious manipulation to keep the economic catastrophy going. Anyone naming that as a reason is either a useful idiot or socialist Control Freak. More than a few here.

Shutdown doesn’t affect the ruling elite.

They still get paid on a regular basis.

I wonder if unemployment claims are not a minor problem compared to running out of cash to fund day to day state operations in the face of severely reduced revenues.

He may not have the money to pay the claims because it has already been siphoned off and spent paying ordinary bills

“Pritzker will be in jail then with all the other ex-Governors.”

Unlikely - he’s got more money than he knows what to do with, so the greed that usually turns chief executives in Illinois into license plate stampers is unlikely to bring him down. Being both rich and stupid, he’s the perfect stooge for the machine - they’ll tell him what to do, he’ll gladly go along, and as the state spirals down the toilet he’ll take the hits while the real powers behind the throne get fat and rich (but never as fat and rich as him).
