On Monday morning I had a delivery to my apartment from the nearby off-licence - or liquor store, as they say over here.
And I put a jokey picture on Twitter of a bottle of gin and eight bottles of tonic, with the caption that at least I had the next week sorted.
After leaving the White House Briefing Room on Monday evening following a marathon two-hour 24-minute press conference, I felt I could have knocked off the whole lot in one sitting.
This has been the most dizzying, jaw-dropping, eyeball-popping, head-spinning news conference I have ever attended. And I was at Bill Clinton's news conference in 1998 when he faced the press for the first time over his relationship with Monica Lewinsky.
I was at this president's first White House gathering when he called me "another beauty". I was in Helsinki when he had his first news conference with Vladimir Putin, and seemed to prefer to believe the Russian leader over his own security and intelligence chiefs on interference in the 2016 election.
What made last night's encounter unique was the context. And secondly, this was, if you like, a distillation - all the talk of gin, I think, forced me to use that word - in one news conference of what three and a half years of Donald Trump has been like to cover.
Donald Trump walked into the briefing room with scores to settle with the media. This wasn't about the dead, the desperately sick, the people fearful of catching the virus. This was about him. And more particularly his profound sense of grievance that the media has been critical of his handling of Covid-19.

Not saying DJT had anything to do with it but it sure is another one of those "coincidences".
The first premise you should understand when a brit writes anything about the US is that they come from a failed empire and are losers. That is also the second and third premise you should take.
They are snarky, petty, back-biting, arrogant (without any justification), sanctimonious turds.
This drivel is not worthy of the attention of the headlines box.
Oh the Butt hurt. The horror.
The media did the same thing to Bush after 9/11 and surprisingly FDR after Pearl Harbor. Not ALL of the media, but enough. Claiming....oooo spooky music....HE KNEW...HE KNEW. So childish.
If they claim it is propaganda they are lying. Propaganda is contrived messages...
What President Trump showed was the TRUTH.
Hey Jonathan, do you even recognize TRUTH when you see it?
Since this is BBC, the correct British technical term is "poofter" pronounced "pooftah."
It was a beautiful thing, actually she needs more men to talk to her that way, might actually teach to show some respect
Yep, her parents failed to teach her the word respect.
The president showing the fake news to the fake news and describing why its fake news - its dissembling the disinformation machine using the disinformation machine, for all to see, everybodies watching it now, we all are at home - he truly is a genius.
Everyday president Trump is president it gets just a little harder to be a democrat
I guess there are “downsides” to building an aircraft carrier that is “invisible” to radar because it is made of rice paper...
LOL! Yes! I noticed that as well, that was brilliant, he was like a school teacher scolding students “Now see, you were lying” and then grinning
He is destroying their credibility and they see it shredding right before their eyes.
Anybody who has watched these can plainly tell this guy knows how to be President and is rocking it!
Reporters are drunk on the job?
This explains about half my questions for them.
Our media is incapable of genuflection or and lack even a sliver of objectivity when it comes to Trump.
They live in a bubble full of hubris like Hollywood or congress.
Every story has one purpose.... slam Trump. They cannot even write a clean story about Trump doing something good - look at the CBS reporting on the hospital ships. They celebrated the governors for requesting them and dinged Trump who provided them. Neither of those ships or the field hospitals that Trump constructed in record time were needed, but he did it because they begged for them. What does he get? More snark.
Off the job, too.
thanks
That news bimbo is Paula Reid of CBS. The reason Trump said what he did to her about China is that she is married to pajama-boy Jason Reid (AKA Jason Kolsevich.[he took her name when they married]) who worked in China with the “American Chamber of Commerce in China” and continues to work in international areas.
