Skip to comments. The Calls For An End To JBE’s (Louisiana) Shutdown Are Starting To Come In

This morning we had a post talking about the letter that State Rep. Danny McCormick (R-Shreveport) released to his colleagues and the public calling for an end to the economic shutdown Gov. John Bel Edwards is imposing on the state of Louisiana as a response to the Wuhan virus. As we noted Friday, the primary justification for the shutdown was to protect the states health care system from being overwhelmed by virus patients, and that justification is no longer valid, if it ever was, because its now unmistakably clear the system will not be overwhelmed.
McCormick might have been the first to openly call for a halt to the shutdown at the end of April, but hell hardly be alone. Today he was joined by State Rep. Mark Wright (R-Covington), who said the statewide stay-at-home order in place for the last month must end on April 30.
Our economy cannot sustain an extension of this order, Wright said. I respect and commend Governor Edwards efforts to protect the people of Louisiana, and I commend our healthcare professionals and the people for doing their part to reduce the spread of COVID-19. But, at the end of the day, we cannot continue with these drastic measures as unemployment soars and countless small businesses close their doors permanently. Two of our largest economic sectors tourism, and oil and gas have been wiped out, with little hope in the near future. Our state faces an economic abyss that will challenge us for years. Lets put our faith in our people and give them a fighting chance to recover.
At this point, those who are most vulnerable are aware of their risk factors and can make their own choices, Wright said. We should continue to follow CDC guidelines, but also follow our neighbors in Texas and Oklahoma in opening, while maintaining social distancing when possible and washing our hands frequently, of course. We should continue to support leaders at all levels in their work to conquer this pandemic. But the time is coming when our current state of existence will be untenable. On May 1, we must begin opening as much as possible.
In Texas, theyre about to reopen the state starting today while Edwards is still talking about keeping Louisiana closed through May. The economic implications of such an eventuality could be utterly catastrophic for Louisianas outmigration problem, among other things.
Wright and McCormick are only two of a great many state legislators who have signaled they wont stand for that kind of prolonged damage.
Crickets chirp in SC.
I guess Henry can’t be bothered.
“In Texas, theyre about to reopen the state starting today...”
What has opened in Texas?
Nope. Too early unless they want a second spike.
Sez who? The same people who told us a month ago that 2 million were gonna die?
More FearPorn from the psycho paranoids.
“Nope. Too early unless they want a second spike.”
The only way to prevent a second wave is to stay shutdown till 90% of the population is immune.
The only way to do that while staying shutdown is with a vaccine.
Oh brother... Second wave won’t arrive until the fall. Everyone will deal with it then by masking. No way any state can be closed over 6 months.
Agreed. I keep saying the same thing here on FR only to flamed by the pearl clutchers, weak-willed, nervous nancies, and fear porn types.
When did FR become a bastion for pussies?
This week is their last hurrah. They’ll begin soon slitting their wrists. They would rather die (or would rather see millions of Americans die) that admit they were wrong.
There will never be a vaccine because we still have a vaccine for the common flu. The flu shot available for the common flu is not a vaccine or a cure. Rather it can only mitigate the chances of you contracting the flu or the effects if you contract it. Millions of people who get a flu shot still contract the flu every year and many of them are hospitalized or die.
So if they cannot cure the common flu, what makes anybody think they can cure COVID-19? And if by some miracle they do create a cure how long will that take? 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 20 years? And how long are you willing to sit inside your cage, er, home under lockdown?
...we still DON’T have a vaccine for the common flu...
“The flu shot available for the common flu is not a vaccine or a cure. “
“Rather it can only mitigate the chances of you contracting the flu or the effects if you contract it.”
If you. contract it nothing will mitigate your chances of contracting it ...
Stop this NONSENSE - Get rid of Fauci, protect the elderly with pre-existing conditions, and get everyone else back to work.
Youre not, hmmmm whats the word, oh yea.
Smart. Youre not smart.
The flu vaccine is an annual crap shoot. Some years they get it right. Some years they dont.
I think there will be a short spike no matter unless we stay closed for 6 mos. 4 parishes account for 13,000 of the 21,000 cases in La., which are the large populations. Look at Sweden’s stats. They asked their people to be prudent about things. They are no. 19 on the list. 86% of Swedes live in urban areas. https://virusncov.com/
Nothing! Gov. Abbott still terrified by the mythological curve.
“Nope. Too early unless they want a second spike.”
So what? As long as the state medical system doesn’t get overwhelmed to the point people are dying in the hallways, open everything back up! That’s the ONLY reason for the shutdown in the first place!!!
Yes, people will catch it and die. But for America, sooner is better than later, if later means a depression.
Nobody gets out of here alive. So stop the madness!
“When did FR become a bastion for pussies?”
Good question. Gotta wonder about these people, and maybe some accounts.

I have an idea. Stay shut down until everyone now alive dies naturally. That’s the ticket!
