One word keeps recurring in online discussions of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmers latest orders to fight the states raging COVID-19 outbreak: Insanity. Last week, the first-term Democrat issued an order extending the states stay-at-home policy, which had been set to expire April 15, until May 1. Michigan has the third-highest number of coronavirus cases of any state in America, and certainly strong measures are required to get the pandemic under control. But the devil is in the details, and Whitmers new order instantly provoked a firestorm of outrage.
Among the complaints was that Whitmer had prohibited sale of seeds and other garden supplies, at a time when vegetable gardens need to be planted. Executive Order 2020-42 is titled, Temporary requirement to suspend activities that are not necessary to sustain or protect life, and is quite specific about which activities are and are not necessary. Stores with more than 50,000 square feet (e.g., Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot) are ordered to close areas of the store by cordoning them off, placing signs in aisles, posting prominent signs, removing goods from shelves, or other appropriate means that sell carpet or flooring, furniture, and garden centers and plant nurseries. So if Grandma went to Walmart for groceries and hoped to pick up some tomato plants or cucumber seeds while she was there sorry, Grandma! You could get a thousand-dollar fine and 90 days in jail for disobeying Whitmers orders.
Posting photos from a Walmart in Grand Rapids showing the now-banned seeds cordoned off with yellow tape, one Twitter user declared: @GovWhitmer has banned us from growing our own food. This is [bleeping] insane. ...

Something is very wrong in Kentucky
Tennessee and Kentucky have a long common border, very similar demographics, topology, and heritage and yet Tennessee has very stable US state governmental financial statistics, and Kentucky has one of the worst. It has become the Illinois of the South.

And this has been true in TN under
both Democratic and Republican leadership, consistently
Where is the ACLU?
Nah. My Governor sucks more than yours. Northam.
NY’s is on her heels.
If only it were only a matter of her being half-witted.
Nah, Cuomo is the worst.
Northam is a lunatic!
Gotta give Montana’s Bullock a mention here as well.
"How does shutting down a shopping aisle equate to a ban on growing?"
These people really ARE that stupid!!
Good to know. When we considered places to retire, Tennessee kept rising to the top of our list. Then it all worked out to do exactly that. Happy here!
Wolf in PA and Newsome in CA need to be on the list as well.
Between WA, PA, MI, and NJ, this would be a hotly contested race for the bottom.
Seedlings for fruit and vegetable plants are EBT eligible. There are people who receive government assistance for food that take advantage of this to help their (and ultimately our) dollars stretch a little further.
It’s putting some poor at risk of not eating healthy later in the year.
“the first-term Democrat”
There’s your problem. Drunk on power. A good indicator though of how many lefty govs think. They see this as an OPORTUNITY, not chance to protect their constituents.
How did I guess? I think I’m clairvoyant or something.
The majority of those governors will run for re-election in 2022. Do you think they’ll lose votes, because of the stay home orders? I live in Oshkosh, and I hate Gov. Evers’ order.
C’mon.
Are these people really worse than “Noisome” Newsome or Northanm?
