They cannot cut back on the gold plated pensions and healthcare benefits they gave to public sector employees as per the state constitution. So they will just keep raising taxes and raising taxes until they kill off businesses and then people really flee the state in droves. That will kill property values. They will raise property taxes, which is popular because they feel no one can pick up their house and move it out of state. But when the taxes render the property incapable of being profitable, landowners will walk away. Detroit was full of abandoned houses that no would buy even for a dollar, because they would also have to pay the back taxes on the houses.

I have a very good friend who is an Illinois state senator. Extremely conservative. Poor gyy just beats his head against the wall because of the Democrat supermajority. There is nothing he can do but fight the good fight.

Illinois does NOT have unlimited taxing power. In fact, the state constitution forbids taxing retirement income (social security, 1099 retirement income) and changing the ultra rich pension plans for government employees. And there was just an increase in the state income tax on the productive, so it would be hard even for the dems to raise it again.

Actually, outside of the 6-county metro Chicago area the real estate taxes are reasonable. We live about 7 miles outside the metro area, and our RE tax is about 40% of what it was inside the metro area.
