If a formula leaves out a huge chunk of cases between survivors and fatalities, it's suspect.

I imagine that’s with the reported cases and there’s still a lot of reason to believe that much larger numbers are mild enough to not be reported...until we get good data on those “stealth” cases, we have no idea of the morbidity/lethality for a population...
It is ultimately impossible to say. Viruses and bacteria are always exchanging genetic data and they move in and out of benign and virulent states.

I read an article yesterday from I think Philadelphia where random testing showed 40-50% antibodies presence in the pool which should tell is that the number of estimated Covid 19 will be much higher than the numbers we use now and will drive the death rate down substantially
