A fire has engulfed large parts of a prison in Russia's Siberia region following a riot by inmates who accused guards of mistreating them.

The area around the high-security Penal Colony No 15 in Angarsk has been sealed off and security forces deployed.

There are reports of casualties but their number is unclear.

Russia's penal service said inmates had "attacked a guard" who had to be taken to hospital.

Officials said the unrest was under control and investigators had opened an investigation.

If you are in prison in Siberia, you don’t have much to lose.

The video I posted in actually from 1993 and not from a location it is claimed to be from. VOA tried to use it as recent in 2006 for its propaganda that is why fake title.

That’s one way of staying warm in Soviet prisons in Siberia.

Had a couple of friends in them during the Stalin period. They were not fond of them.

Near Lake Baikal about 150 miles north of Mongolia.

If you can find Irkutsk on the Risk playing board, you are mighty close.

Looks like it is hovering just above freezing most days in April.

Well, it’s too be expected. All American are inherently untrustworthy, right. Not like Russians.

I am not saying that but VOA has a poor record. I don’t think VOA is as American as an apple pie. A big jailbreak in Russia is a rare thing but usually a mess.

You’re also not going much of anywhere even if you break out of the prison...

“A fire has engulfed large parts of a prison”

vs.

?

Generally true. Gulags were placed either far north or far south in USSR and often hundreds to a thousand miles away from a nearest population center. That means upon leaving the facility you are eaten by tigers or bears or die of exposure to either extreme cold or heat and dehydration.
Inmates used to love their prison for being a source of life.

Yup, I read about those - and my copy of One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich is well thumbed as well.

Internet regulations do require this to be posted now as the word gulag has been introduced into the thread.

My dad was exiled to a village across the Angara River from where the city now stands; 1947-1956. He was with his two younger siblings and mother. The Soviets were building Angarsk at the time.

That’s pretty silly...

“I’m locked in this cage. I think I’ll start a fire in here.”
