This was one of the biggest eruptions of all time: Mt. Tambora.
1815: Mt. Tambora is one of several eruptions (also Baekdu: 946 AD, Samalas: 1257 AD) with a VEI of 7 maybe largest in
recorded history, but there were many others that make Mt. Tambora look like a firecracker - Mt Toba, Yellowstone to name a some of the better known ones with VEI over 9 - scale is logarithmic 10X larger for each number.
Mt. Tambora crater is 100km, Yellowstone crater is 1000 km. Reference: Mt St Helens was VEI of 5

I saw an explanation that more extra-solar cosmic radiation gets through when the sun isn’t providing as much interference and that some of it penetrates deeply enough to produce the effect. Oh bullcrap!
