Laffer said in a recent interview with Just the News that the government's widespread shutdown of society to slow the spread of coronavirus was medically necessary and fit within "reasonable limits," but reopening the economy should be based on calculated, fact-based risk rather than irrational, widespread fear
"Let me tell you how I feel," Laffer said. "Now I'm 80. I've got six children, 13 grandchildren, and I have four great grandchildren. Really cool people. People I love more than life. I am perfectly willing to accept the higher risk of mortality, of dying, if I can feel better about their economic futures going forward. I do not want to sacrifice their opportunities going forward, just to have me live another week. We have to be very careful about the tradeoffs and make damn sure you dont ruin the countrys future. That's what smart people do
"Everyone is suffering from this pandemic, all the way across in economics, in physical terms, family cohesion," he said. "Child abuse is way up, suicides are way up. There are all sorts of ways this virus is doing a hell of a lot of damage to our society and to our economy. They have a perfect right, role and responsibility to respond to that pandemic."

Agree 100%
AMEN!
I’m ready to lick a Waffle House sink faucet, then lock down and away, taking my chances. Let’s get this done with.
Agreed! Bump to the top!
Amen. I’m in his camp.
Laffer et al convinced another freedom-loving president of making a bold move and I hope he again has such a persuasive effort left to benefit the country. Trump already knows this is the right thing and having Laffer in his corner should stiffen his resolve, IMO.
Summer. People need the summer. Look for the anger to be huge if some Govs go past mid-may.
I can only listen by radio, read web articles, and, of course, browse FR. Can somebody tell me: It’s essentially just President Trump, Drs. Fauci and Birx, and VP Pence at these pressers, correct?. No one else?
My point: If it’s just these four speaking at the pressers, I think the news will always be the same. And if it follows that pattern, then we’ll need to see new players speaking at the pressers to learn anything really new. Thus if there is news to share about the economy (such as when and how we will re-engage it), we should expect to see an economic expert attending these pressers and having a turn at the mic.
Until then, I expect we’ll keep hearing the same message we’ve been hearing about the progress on containing the virus, and, maybe, news on treatments/cures.
“I am perfectly willing to accept the higher risk of mortality ...”
It should be more in the hands of the pre-elderly. How much money do they want to hand out to keep the elderly propped up?
Amen, ma’am! Thank you!
I love Laffer and especially the Laffer curve. It sure takes one back to the Reagan glory days.
BUT. This issue is liberty. Certainly free people are usually prosperous people but if the bottom line is economic then it becomes the Prog promises versus the eGOP promises.
This doesnt end until Trump gives the speech that the PM of the Netherlands gave.
Of course that speech will be eviscerated but the Chicken Freeper contingent.
We don't use zero tolerance in deciding whether to allow automobile transportation or fighting the flu every season. Zero tolerance cannot be the goal for this disease.
I'm also willing to accept some risk for the sake of my childrens' future.
Yup. Especially if it’s just you and your significant other going for a ride and getting hassled. Uh, NO!
Amen.
Give me liberty or give me death.
What we have now is the EXISTENCE of feudal serfdom...
....with neither liberty or life.
Nailed it...
Not just every Fed employee but everyone who gets any government check.
Too many people are secure, for now, with government checks and can afford to ride this out even if we end up in a New Great Depression. I wonder how many going broke Freepers are being called FluBros by people getting government checks.
Government check recipients can isolate and continue getting their checks. Everyone else should be free to go earn their checks.
Does it makes sense that private sector which generates all wealth and income can forced into bankruptcy and unemployment by government diktat while the government government checks flow?
Competing states will have to do what's best for the people.
The elderly can isolate until mass immunity is achieved and that sooner rather then later. The elderly and vulnerable wont be safe until then.
